Hippodamos z Miletu był teoretykiem szachownicowego planu miasta. Nie był twórcą tego planu, jak myśleli badacze w XIX wieku, jednakże unowocześnił regularny plan zakładania miast o funkcjonalizm. Zastosował go przybudowie Miletu oraz planowaniu Pireusu. Plan każdego z tych miast oparł na dwóch głównych, krzyżujących się ze sobą ulicach. Na skrzyżowaniu tych ulic zastał założony plac miejski - agora, która łączyła wszystkie dzielnice miasta.

Hippodamos of Miletus was a theorist of the chessboard plan of the city. He was not the creator of this plan, as thought researchers in the 19th century, however his regularly plan set up cities of functionalism. It was applied in the construction of Miletus and the planning of Piraeus. The plan of each of these cities was based on the two main intersecting with each other streets.
