Irezumi - an image of traditional Japanese tattoo art and its connections with yakuza

Tematem niniejszej pracy dyplomowej jest historia tradycyjnej, japońskiej sztuki tatuażu, a także powiązania owej praktyki z półświatkiem przestępczym w Japonii. Analiza zmian jakim ulegało postrzeganie tatuażu przez społeczeństwo japońskie na przestrzeni wieków dostarcza informacji na temat wykorzystywania tatuowania jako kary za wystąpienia przeciw prawu. Skutkiem takich działań jest między innymi obecna do czasów współczesnych stereo typizacja tatuażu jako elementu nierozłącznie związanego z przestępczością.Celem pracy jest przedstawienie historii japońskiego tatuażu od najwcześniej udokumentowanych wzmianek aż do czasów współczesnych wraz z wyjaśnieniem źródła negatywnego postrzegania tej dziedziny sztuki w społeczeństwie japońskim. Pierwszy rozdział pracy obejmuje okres historyczny od epoki Jōmon aż do czasów współczesnych, a także opis przygotowania i procesu powstawania tatuażu zgodnie z tradycyjnymi zasadami. Druga część pracy poświęcona została zaprezentowaniu działalności yakuzy w Japonii oraz powiązania przestępczości z sztuką tatuażu.Praca powstała w oparciu o literaturę traktującą o sztuce tatuażu , mitologii oraz historii Japonii co umożliwiło zredagowanie pracy, w której przestawiono najważniejsze informacje dotyczące zmian postrzegania tatuowania oraz negatywnego nastawienia społeczeństwa japońskiego względem tatuażu.

The subject of this thesis is the history of traditional Japanese tattoo art, as well as the connection of this practice with the underworld in Japan. Analysis of changes that have been perceived by Japanese society over the centuries, presents information on the use of tattooing as a punishment for acting against the law. The effect of such actions is, among others, the current situation of contemporary tattoo stereo typification as an element inseparable from crime.The purpose of the work is to present the history of Japanese tattoo from the earliest documented mention up to modern times together with an explanation of the sources of negative evaluation of this art in Japanese society. The first chapter of the work covers the historical period from the Jōmon era up to modern times, as well as a description of the preparation and process of creating a tattoo in accordance with traditional applications. The second part of the work was devoted to yakuza in Japan and the conotations between crime and tattoo art.The work was developed on the basis of literature about tattoo art, mythology and Japanese history in the scope of editing the work in which the most important information about changes in the perception of tattooing and the negative attitude of the Japanese regarding tattooing is set.
