Hate speech in social media as a threat to the information environment of schoolchildren

Praca przedstawia omówienie zagadnienia mowy nienawiści w jednym z głównych środowisk informacyjnych młodzieży szkolnej, jakim są media społecznościowe. Problem został ujęty w perspektywie ekologii informacji. Przeprowadzone badanie miało na celu wykazanie, że mowa nienawiści stanowi poważne zagrożenie dla środowiska informacyjnego młodych. W badaniach posłużono się analizą i krytyką piśmiennictwa oraz metodą ilościową – metodą sondażu diagnostycznego. Badania własne zostały oparte na danych zebranych za pomocą ankiety. Pozwoliły one udowodnić, że mowa nienawiści jest zjawiskiem znanym i obecnym w środowisku informacyjnym uczniów klas V-VIII. Jej zagrożenie wypływa głównie ze szkodliwych treści, wprowadzających dyskomfort dla użytkowników mediów, a także z nieświadomości konsekwencji obrażania innych w sieci. We współczesnym świecie bardzo wiele mówi się o mowie nienawiści. Przeprowadzone badanie pozwoliło na spojrzenie na problem z nowej perspektywy, którą stanowi ekologia informacji. Określono niebezpieczny wpływ tego zjawiska na środowisko informacyjne młodzieży. Analiza tego problemu wśród młodych zachęca do dalszych badań nad potrzebą dbania o czystość środowiska informacyjnego już od momentu, gdy pojawiają się jego pierwsze sygnały.

The present master’s thesis discusses the issue of hate speech in one of the main information environments for schoolchildren, which is social media. The problem has been put in the perspective of information ecology. The aim of the study was to show that hate speech is a serious threat to the information environment of young people. In order to carry it out, the analysis and criticism of the literature, and the quantitative method - a diagnostic survey method - were used. The main study was based on the collection of data through a questionnaire form. It allowed to prove that the speech of hatred is indeed a well-known phenomenon which is present in and present in the information environment of students of grades V-VIII. Its threat comes mainly from harmful content that introduces discomfort to media users, as well as from unawareness of the consequences of offending others on the Internet. In the modern world, there is a great deal of talk of hate speech, and the study has allowed us to look at the problem from a new perspective. The dangerous impact of this phenomenon on the information environment has been identified from the perspective of the ecology of information, and the analysis of this issue among young people encourages further research into the need to keep the information environment clean from the younger generations, where its first signs are appearing.
