Artykuł przedstawia i weryfikuje hipotezę P. Guiraud, zgodnie z którą regularne zmiany fonetyczne można wyjaśnić wyrównaniem równowagi liczbowej systemu fonologicznego języka w stosunku do uniwersalnej normy określającej częstość występowania danego fonemu. Według P. Guiraud, zastosowanie metod liczbowych pozwoliłoby podać przyczynowe wyjaśnienie przebiegu regularnych praw głosowych, co stanowi nowatorskie podejście w fonetyce diachronicznej, mającej najczęściej charakter opisowy, nie zaś objaśniający. Pierwsza część artykułu poświęcona jest weryfikacji danych statystycznych pochodzących z prac P. Guiraud. Metodologiczne niedoskonałości sprawiają, że “hipoteza o uniwersalnej równowadze systemu fonologicznego” jest trudna do obronienia. W drugiej części artykułu autor formułuje nową koncepcję, nazwaną “hipotezą o wewnętrznej równowadze systemu fonologicznego”, która określa dążenie systemu fonologicznego do zrównania częstości występowania fonemów. Jako korpus tekstów do badań statystycznych wykorzystany został tekst "Małego Księcia" A. de Saint-Exupéry’ego w trzech wersjach językowych: łacińskiej, starofrancuskiej i francuskiej.

The article presents and verifies P. Guiraud's hypothesis, according to which regular sound changes may be explained by a numerical balance of the language phonological system compared to a universal norm that specifies model frequency of the phoneme occurrence. According to P. Guiraud, application of statistical methods would allow to give a causal explanation for a course of regular phonetic laws. This represents an innovative approach in diachronic phonology, which traditionally has a descriptive, not explanatory, character. The first part of the article aims to verify a statistical data originating from P. Guiraud’s research. Methodological imperfections make that his “hypothesis of the universal balance of the phonological system” is hard to defend. In the second part of the article, the author formulates a new concept, called “a hypothesis of the internal balance of the phonological system”, which specifies striving of the phonological system to balance the frequency of phonemes occurrence. The text of "Little Prince" by A. de Saint-Exupéry, in three language versions: Latin, Old French and Modern French, was used as a base for statistical research.
