Reform of the Church in the letters of Peter Damian

Niniejsza praca przedstawia koncepcję reformy Kościoła Piotra Damianiego (1007-1072) w jego twórczości epistolarnej. Głównym problemem badawczym było czy owa doktryna była nowatorska oraz w jaki sposób ta propozycja sytuowała się pośród myśli pozostałych intelektualistów kurii rzymskiej XI wieku? W tym celu pracę podzielono na cztery rozdziały. W rozdziale pierwszym zarysowano kryzys i próby reform w Kościele od IX wieku do czasów Piotra Damianiego. Opisano również koncepcje innych myślicieli dotyczących relacji między władzą kościelną a świecką w celu ukazania szerokiego tła ideowego tamtych czasów. W rozdziale drugim przybliżono postać Avellanity. Zarysowano jego biografię i twórczość. Dokonano również charakterystyki źródeł, czyli listów. W rozdziale trzecim omówiono koncepcję reformy organizacyjnej Piotra Damianiego. Ukazano jego poglądy i propozycje dotyczące charakteru reformy, relacji między imperium a sacerdotium (elementy myśli politycznej), elekcji papieża, inwestytury oraz symonii. W rozdziale czwartym zaprezentowano koncepcję reformy moralnej Avellanity. Przedstawiono stanowisko myśliciela wobec potrzeby odnowy, nikolaizmu, sodomii oraz pozostałych naruszeń etyki przez księży. Końcowo w pracy podjęto próbę oceny oryginalności oraz specyfiki myśli Piotra Damianiego. Wyodrębniono cechy typowe owych propozycji, sposób argumentacji, nowatorstwo oraz szczególne idee zawarte w tychże listach.

This study presents the concept of the reform of the Church developed by Peter Damian (1007-1072) in his letters. The main research problem was whether this doctrine was innovative and how it was situated within the thought of other intellectuals connected with Roman curia in the eleventh century. This paper was divided into four chapters. The first chapter outlines the Church crisis and reform efforts from the ninth century to the time of Peter Damian. Furthermore it discusses the ideas of other thinkers concernig the relations between ecclesiastical and social power in order to provide a intellectual context of this period. The second chapter focuses on Peter Damian of Fonte Avellana. It presents an outline of his biography and works. The sources - his letters - was also characterized. The third chapter examines Peter Damian concept of organizational reform. It discusses his views and proposals concerning the nature of reform, the relations between imperium and sacerdotium (elements of his political thought), the election of pope, investiture and simony. The fourth chapter presents the Avellanite's concept of moral reform. It analyzes his position on the need of renewal, nicolaitism (clerical marriage), sodomy and othe violations of clerical ethics. Finally the study attempt to assess the originality distinctive character of Peter Damian's thought. It identifies characteristic features of his proposal, his type of argumentation, the innovative and specific ideas and concepts expressed in his letters.
