Admiral Yi Sun Shin – the role of the national hero in Korean society

Od lat 70-tych XX wieku, Korea Południowa podejmuje wiele działań, by zaprezentować swoim obywatelom oraz przeważnie anglojęzycznym obcokrajowcom postać admirała Yi Sun Shin. Ten wybitny bohater jest dla Koreańczyków wzorem konfucjańskim, gdyż przestrzegał pięciu powinności - był dobrym ojcem, ale przede wszystkim lojalnym wobec króla żołnierzem. Podczas wojny Imdzin (1592-1599) udało mu się pokonać w bitwach morskich Japończyków, którzy chcieli dostarczyć prowiant i zapasy broni dla swoich żołnierzy na pogrążony w wojnie Półwysep Koreański. W pierwszym rozdziale pracy znajdują się rozważania teoretyczne dotyczące terminów takich jak naród, bohater narodowy, kultura narodowa, patriotyzm i państwo. W rozdziale drugim omawiana jest również rola Yi Sun Shin w społeczeństwie koreańskim, uwzględniając zwłaszcza koniec wieku XX wieku i wiek XXI. Praca przedstawia również w ostatnim rozdziale słynne miejsca w Korei Południowej, takie jak pomniki, muzea, które upamiętniają Yi Sun Shin i dorobek historyczny oraz kulturalny w postaci różnych wytworów (książek, filmów, dram, gier komputerowych). Skupia także uwagę na Nanjung Ilgi, czyli Pamiętnik wojenny autorstwa Yi Sun Shin znajdujący się na liście światowego dziedzictwa UNESCO. W pracy podkreśla się ważne czynniki finansowe i turystyczne w promowaniu bohatera narodowego admirała Yi Sun Shin w Korei i poza jej granicami.

From the 1970s, South Korea has undertaken many activities to show its citizens, and mostly English-speaking foreigners, the figure of Admiral Yi Sun Shin. This outstanding hero is considered a Confucian model by the Koreans because he led his life according to the five duties - he was a good father, but above all, a loyal soldier to the king. In naval battles during the Imjin War (1592-1599) he managed to defeat the Japanese who wanted to provide food and inventory of weapons for their soldiers fighting on the Korean Peninsula. The role of Yi Sun Shin in Korean society is being discussed in this thesis, including specifically the end of the twentieth century and the twenty-first century. In the first chapter of the thesis there is theoretical discussion regarding terms such as nation, national hero, national culture, patriotism and the state. The second chapter also introduces famous places in South Korea, such as monuments, museums that commemorate Yi Sun Shin, historical and cultural heritage in various creations (books, movies, dramas, video games). It also pays attention to Nanjung Ilgi which is the War Diary written by Yi Sun Shin and listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The thesis highlights the important financial and touristic factors in promoting a national hero Admiral Yi Sun Shin in Korea and abroad.
