Poetization in Translation. Analysis of selected translations of Ten Nights’ Dreams by Natsume Sōseki

Niniejsza praca skupia się na analizie przekładów Snów dziesięciu nocy Natsume Sōsekiego pod kątem stylizacji poetyckiej języka. Szczególny nacisk położony zostanie na analizę środków artystycznych zastosowanych w badanych tłumaczeniach, a także ich wpływ na procesy hermeneutyczne i dysproporcje interpretacyjne. Autorka przybliży koncepcje teoretyczne uwzględnione w niniejszej pracy, zaprezentuje badane fragmenty przekładów, a także zastanowi się nad wpływem, który poetyzacja języka wywiera na odbiór utworu, a także co powoduje jej brak w tłumaczeniu. W tym celu posłuży się trzema różnie datowanymi przekładami angielskimi i jednym polskim.

The following paper focuses on the analysis of poetization in the selected translations of Ten Nights’ Dreams by Natsume Sōseki. Particular emphasis will be put on the use of stylistic devices, applied in the translations, as well as on the manner they impact hermeneutic processes performed by the reader and on the rendition disparities. The author will describe main theories applied in the following thesis and present passages of analysed translations. She will also reflect on the manner poetization influences interpretation of the literary work, and what happens when there is an actual lack of stylistic devices in translated work. Examined translations contain three English versions and a Polish one, which all were made in different periods of time.
