The country's historical division and the constant threat of armed conflict contribute to South Korea's culture of militarization and investment in defence. In this regard, compulsory military service is a crucial issue. On the other hand, throughout the decades the military has gained considerable independence in its operations, which has led to numerous human rights violations. This thesis examines the issue of irregularities in the South Korean military, and analyses its causes, and consequences, as well as presents potential solutions. Moreover, it describes the compulsory military service in South Korea, examines the prevalence of violence in the military, and highlights individual cases of abuse. The significance of the problem is reflected in popular culture and efforts by the government and citizens to improve the well-being of soldiers. The ongoing debate over the transition from mandatory conscription to volunteer recruitment is also analysed. Understanding the causes and consequences of irregularities in the South Korean military is crucial to promoting a safe and healthy military environment.
