The Chinese ideogram MA and its Japanese reinterpretations in the semantics of time and space

Niniejsza praca jest poświęcona analizie chińskiego ideogramu 間 z punktu widzenia jego japońskich reinterpretacji w semantyce czasu i przestrzeni. Analiza ta opiera się na założeniach metodologicznych etymologii ideograficznej. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawiono ogólną charakterystykę systemu grafemicznego języka japońskiego oraz jego historię rozwoju. Drugi rozdział poświęcono różnym podejściom badawczym do ideogramów. Trzeci rozdział zawiera analizę etymologii i znaczeń ideogramów 間, 時i 空 oraz przedstawia interpretację ideogramu間 jako kodującego znaczenie kontinuum czasoprzestrzennego (we współczesnym rozumieniu z punktu widzenia fizyki) w złożeniach jikan 時間 i kūkan 空間. W czwartym rozdziale pokrótce opisano tło historyczne rozwoju nauki w Japonii w erze Meiji.

This thesis is devoted to the analysis of a Chinese ideogram間 from the point of view of its Japanese reinterpretations in the semantics of time and space. The analysis is based on the premises of an approach called ideographic etymology. The first chapter presents general characteristics of Japanese writing system and the history of its development. The second chapter is devoted to different research approaches towards ideograms. The third chapter contains an analysis of etymologies and meanings of ideograms間, 時, and 空 and offers an interpretation of 間 as an ideogram which codes the meaning of space-time continuum (in the modern understanding of physics) in compounds jikan 時間 and kūkan 空間. The fourth chapter shortly describes the historical background of the development of science in Japan during the Meiji period.
