The painters of the stage : the artists of the centre

Rozdział Malarze sceny. Artyści środka jest panoramą tych osiągnięć scenograficznych w międzywojniu, które sytuowały się poza nurtem zorganizowanej i programowej awangardy, niemniej wprowadziły do teatrów repertuarowych w Polsce nowoczesną myśl plastyczną (prace Karola Frycza, Wincentego Drabika, Tadeusza Orłowicza, Mieczysława Różańskiego i innych). Rezygnując z przedstawiania osobnych sylwetek artystycznych, autorka skupia się na alfabecie środków scenograficznych, chętnie używanych w międzywojennych teatrze, od barwy i tła architektonicznego poczynając, na "systemie kotarowym" i scenografii mobilnej kończąc. W tle rozważań znajdują się także zagadnienie pozycji scenografa w instytucji teatralnej oraz pojęcia formy i stylizacji.

The chapter The painters of the stage. The artists of the centre proposes a panorama of those interwar stage-design achievements that situated themselves outside the borders of an organized and programmatic avant-garde. Neverthless these works, by Karol Frycz, Wincenty Drabik, Tadeusz Orłowicz, Mieczysław Różański and others, introduced the modern visual ideas into the repertoire theatres in Poland. Putting aside a presentation of indivudial artists, the author focuses on an alphabet of the stage means willingly used in the Polish interwar theatre: from the colour and the architectural background to the ‘curtain system’ and the mobile scenography. Some remarks are also devoted to the position of a stage-designer inside a theatre institution and to the concepts of form and stilisation.
