Gambling and Risking in Russian Prose of the 19th Century

Celem tej pracy dyplomowej jest przybliżenie specyfiki zjawiska hazardu oraz ryzykowania na przykładzie bohaterów literackich rosyjskiej prozy XIX wieku. W pierwszym rozdziale wyjaśnione są pojęcia hazardu i ryzykowania, zwracając szczególną uwagę na psychologiczny oraz biologiczny punkt widzenia. Ten rozdział wyjaśnia mechanizm działania człowieka uzależnionego od hazardu i odpowiada na pytanie czym w ogóle uwarunkowane są skłonności do ryzykowania oraz do hazardu. W celu przybliżenia tych pojęć scharakteryzowano różne typy hazardu, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem omówienia hazardu patologicznego, oraz rodzaje ryzykowania, portret osoby uzależnionej od ryzykowania, a także porównano terminy ryzykowanie i ryzykanctwo. W rozdziale drugim opracowano charakterystykę bohaterów pod kątem uprawiania hazardu w celach rozrywkowych na podstawie analizy postaci Pieczorina z powieści "Bohater naszych czasów" M. Lermontowa, także porównano dwie bohaterki, Antonidy Wasiliewnej z powieści "Gracz" F. Dostojewskiego i hrabiny z opowiadania A. Puszkina "Dama pikowa", a na koniec przytoczono również postaci hrabiego Turbina i jego syna z opowiadania L. Tołstoja "Dwaj huzarzy". W trzecim rozdziale podjęto kwestię obecności hazardu w życiu bohaterów jako problemu uzależnienia, z rozróżnieniem na dwa podtypy. Pierwszym jest uzależnienie od pożądanej wygranej. W tym celu przeanalizowano postać Hermana z "Damy pikowej" A. Puszkina, Aleksjeja Iwanowicza z "Gracza" F. Dostojewskiego oraz Ługina ze "Sztossa" M. Lermontowa. Drugim podtypem jest uzależnienie od samego procesu grania i ryzykowania. Za przykłady posłużuły te same postaci co wyżej, jednak w innym etapie swojego życia lub w innym stopniu zaawansowania swojego nałogu oraz postać Mikołaja Rostowa, bohatera powieści "Wojna i pokój" L. Tołstoja. Na końcu pracy, na podstawie dokonanych analiz, podsumowano obraz hazardzisty i ryzykanta w twórczości A. Puszkina, M. Lermontowa, F. Dostojewskiego, i L. Tołstoja oraz oraz to jak na przestrzeni XIX wieku zmieniała się skłonność do ryzykowania oraz słabość do gier hazardowych bohaterów literackich.

The aim of this diploma thesis is to present the specificity of the phenomenon of gambling and risking on the example of the literary heroes of Russian prose of the 19th century. The first chapter explains the concepts of gambling and risking, paying particular attention to the psychological and biological point of view. This chapter explains the mechanism of action of a person addicted to gambling and answers the question of what determines the propensity to risk and to gamble. In order to introduce these concepts, various types of gambling have been characterized, with particular emphasis on the discussion of pathological gambling and types of risking, a portrait of a person addicted to risk, and the terms risking and risking were compared. The second chapter describes the characterization of the heroes in terms of gambling for entertainment purposes on the basis of the analysis of Pechorin from the novel "The Hero of Our Time" by M. Lermontov, and the comparison of two heroines, Antonida Vasilievna from the novel "The Player" by F. Dostoyevsky and the countess from A. Pushkin's "The Queen of Spades", and finally the figures of Count Turbin and his son from L. Tolstoy's short story "Two hussars" were also cited. The third chapter deals with the issue of the presence of gambling in the lives of the heroes as an addiction problem, distinguishing between two subtypes. The first is addiction to the desired win. For this purpose, the figures of Herman from "The Queen of Spades" by A. Pushkin, Alexey Ivanovich from "The Player" by F. Dostoyevsky and Lugin from "Sztoss" by M. Lermontov were analyzed. The second subtype is addiction to the very process of gambling and risking. Examples are the same characters as above, but at a different stage of their life or the advancement of their addiction, and the figure of Nicholas Rostov, the hero of the novel "War and Peace" by L. Tolstoy. At the end of the work, on the basis of the analyzes carried out, the image of the gambler and risk-taker in the works of A. Pushkin, M. Lermontov, F. Dostoyevsky, and L. Tolstoy was summarized, and how the propensity to take risks and the weakness for gambling changed over the course of the nineteenth century literary heroes.
