Tragic stories in a comic opera: the case of the Fourth day of the Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio

Niniejsza praca magisterska poświęcona jest Dniu czwartemu "Dekameronu"Giovanniego Boccaccia. "Dekameron" jest dziełem o charakterze komicznym, podczas gdy tematem Dnia czwartego jest nieszczęśliwa miłość. Losy bohaterów naznaczone są cierpieniem, a ich miłości odgórnie skazanie na klęskę. Ich historie prowadzą do tragicznego finału – śmierci – i kontrastują z całością utworu. Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów, wstępu i konkluzji. Wstęp poświęcony jest strukturze "Dekameronu" – obecności opowieści ramowej i podziałowi na dni, jak również krótkiej charakterystyce poszczególnych dni oraz narratorom im przewodniczącym. Analizie poddany został również Wstęp do "Dekameronu", w którym autor wskazuje cel i odbiorców dzieła, którymi są kobiety. Rozdział pierwszy opisuje rolę, jaką Dzień czwarty spełnia w "Dekameronie". Została poruszona kwestia pozycji, w jakiej się znajduje – pomiędzy Dniami trzecim a piątym traktującymi o miłościach i wydarzeniach szczęśliwie zakończonych. Zaanalizowany został również Wstęp do Dnia czwartego i zawarta w nim Nowela o gęsiach. W ostatniej części pierwszego rozdziału rozważone zostały powody, dla których Boccaccio zdecydował się poświęcić jeden dzień swego komicznego utworu tematyce tragicznej. Rozdział drugi dotyczy kwestii tradycji, z której wyrasta Dzień czwarty – autorów i dzieł, do których Boccaccio nawiązuje oraz motywy występujące w nowelach Dnia czwartego. Rozdział trzeci stanowi analizę dziesięciu nowel Dnia czwartego. Analiza została przeprowadzona pod kątem motywów i tradycji, z których korzysta autor "Dekameronu", wykazując tragiczny charakter historii opowiedzianych w tym dniu – sprzeczny z komicznym wymiarem dzieła Giovanniego Boccaccia.

The work is dedicated to the Fourth Day of "Decameron" of Giovanni Boccaccio. "Decameron" is a work of a comical nature, kept in an entertaining style, while the main subject of the Fourth Day is the unfortunate love. Fates of characters are marked with suffering, and their love is doomed to failure. Their story leads to the tragic final – death– and contrast with the totality of the piece. The work is composed of three main chapters, the introduction and the conclusion. Introduction contains information about the structure of Decameron – presence of a ‘frame story’ and the division into days. There is also a part devoted to the characteristic of each day and its narrator. The first chapter describes the role the Fourth Day plays in Decameron, its position between thedays Third and Fifth, which are stories about love and events concluded with happy ending. It contains the analysis of the Introduction to the Fourth Day and the novel which is a part of it. In the last part of the first chapter are included reflections about reasons why Boccaccio has decided to sacrifice one of the chapters of his comic work to a tragic theme. The second chapter contains motives from literature and the symbolicaspects of the piece, to which author is making references, their genesis and explanations. The third chapter is an analysis of ten novels from the Fourth Day, which was mainly conducted from the point of view of motives and traditions that the auteur uses to point the tragic character of his stories – being so contradictory to the integrity.

La presente tesi tratta della Quarta giornata del "Decameron" di Giovanni Boccaccio. Il "Decameron" è un'opera comica, mentre la Quarta giornata riguarda il tema dell'amore infelice. Il destino dei personaggi è segnato dalla sofferenza ed il loro amore è condanato al fallimento. Le novelle della Quarta giornata finiscono tragicamente, con la morte dei protagonisti, presentando così il carattere diverso dalle restanti nove giornate.La tesi è composta da tre capitoli, introduzione e conclusione. L’introduzione contiene le informazioni sulla struttura del Decameron - la presenza della cornice, la divisione in giornate, inoltre la breve caratteristica delle singole giornate e dei loro novellatori. Il primo capitolo descrive il ruolo che svolge la Quarta giornata nel "Decameron", la sua posizione tra le giornate Terza i Quinta che trattano delle vicende e degli amoripositivamente conclusi. Viene analizzata l'Introduzione alla Quarta giornata e la novella delle papere. Nell'ultima parte del primo capitolo vengono considerate le ragioni per cui l’autore ha dedicato una giornata della sua opera comica alla tematica tragica. Il secondo capitolo è dedicato alle fonti della Quarta giornata e alle ispirazioni che hanno spinto Boccaccio a comporre l'intero Decameron. Inoltre viene descritta la tematicadella Quarta giornata ed i motivi in essa presenti. Il capitolo terzo consiste nell'analisi delle dieci novelle della Quarta Giornata svolta sotto l'aspetto dei motivi e delle loro origini. L'analisi dimostra il caraterre contrario alla dimensione tragica dell'intera opera.
