“The iconography of the apse-wall paintings in churches of the Kingdom and Tsardom of Serbia (1217-1371)”

Temat tejże pracy stanowią rozważania ikonograficzne dotyczące malowideł w obrębie ścian apsydalnych w poszczególnych cerkwiach powstających na terenie Królestwa i Carstwa Serbii w dobie średniowiecza, ujęte w ramy chronologiczne będące umownymi datami granicznymi wyznaczającymi okres istnienia w tym czasie niepodległej państwowości serbskiej, a więc rok 1217 (otrzymanie korony królewskiej przez Stefana Nemanicza Pierwszego Koronowanego i utworzenie niezależnego Królestwa Serbii) oraz rok 1371 (śmierć Stefana Urosza V i rozpad Carstwa serbskiego). Poprzez analizę oraz zestawienie ze sobą wybranych realizacji malarskich, pochodzących z poszczególnych serbskich cerkwi, a także pełne wyjaśnienie pojawiających się w konkretnych dekoracjach motywów, można wysnuć wnioski na temat ikonografii malowideł w obrębie ścian apsydalnych zdobiących cerkwie budowane na terenie państwa serbskiego Najważniejszym celem tejże pracy jest więc próba odpowiedzenia na pytanie czy możliwe jest nakreślenie linii chronologicznej rozwoju programów malarskich w przestrzeni ściany apsydalnej cerkwi powstających w ciągu całości dziejów średniowiecznego Królestwa i Carstwa Serbii.

This work aims at contemplating examples of the apse-wall painitngs iconography from the several chosen churches built on the territory of the Kingdom and later Tsardom of Serbia in the medieval times, specifically between the dates setting the boundaries of the Serbian statehood, which is 1217 - coronation of Stefan the First-Crowned, marking the beginnings of the sovereign Kingdom of Serbia and 1371 - death of Stefan Uroš V and the disintegration of the Tsardom of Serbia. Through this analysis, confronting examples of paintings from the chosen Serbian churches and an in-depth explanation of the recurring themes and regularities we can come to conclusions about the apse iconography of this time and geographic area. The overarching aim of this work is exactly answering the question whether it is possible to draw up some chronological line of development in regards to the paint programs of the apse-walls of the churches of the medieval Kingdom and Tsardom of Serbia.
