Analysis of risk and regulations in cryptocurrency investments compared to traditional financial instruments

Cryptocurrencies have become the subject of intense debate among both investors and regulators over the past decade. The rapid development of this market raises questions regarding investment risk and the adequacy of regulatory frameworks. Investors often raise the question of whether it is worthwhile to invest in such assets. The aim of this thesis is to examine and compare the risk profile of selected cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin) and traditional financial instruments (the S&P 500 index, gold, crude oil), as well as to analyze the impact of regulations on their investment potential. The first chapter presents the theoretical foundations of financial markets, cryptocurrencies, and risk models. The second chapter provides an empirical study using statistical measures, portfolio analysis, and extreme risk models (VaR and CVaR) for the period 2019–2024. The third chapter discusses regulatory frameworks for traditional markets (MiFID II, SEC, KNF, ESMA) and cryptocurrencies (MiCA, USA, Asia, Poland). The study demonstrates that cryptocurrencies offer high return potential, but their extreme volatility limits their role in portfolios with low risk tolerance. The findings also indicate that the increasing importance of regulation may facilitate the institutionalization of the cryptocurrency market and its integration into the global financial system.
