Virginia Woolf's Orlando as a Biographia Literaria

Autorka pracy, odwołując się do "Biographii Literarii" Samuela Taylora Coleridge’a, interpretuje powieść "Orlando" jako zbeletryzowaną formę subiektywnej biografii literatury. Ponadto "Orlando" jako wyraz poglądów w kwestii nowej, modernistycznej biografii przedstawia literacką osobowość Woolf. Poprzez piętrowe odczytanie idei androgynii rozumianej jako metafora połączenia sprzecznych pierwiastków autorka wysuwa tezę o androgyniczności zarówno biografii, jako zespolenia faktów i fikcji, jak i kanonu literackiego, który jest zestawieniem elementu subiektywnego i obiektywnego. Z kwestią norm literackich łączy się również symbolika powieści. Furthermore, the novel "Orlando" represents a new modernist form of biography and attempts to present the literary personality of Virginia Woolf. Through multilayer reading of the idea of the androgyny understood as a metaphor of merging of contradictory elements, the author supports the argument that both biography, as a blend of facts and fiction, and literary canon, as a combination of subjective and objective elements, are androgynous. The literary norms are linked with symbolism of the novel as well. This approach presents Virginia Woolf as an opponent of established rules and principles who questions and casts doubt on biography and novel conventions and who tends to undermine the reason of existence of the arbitrary literary canons.
