Stereotypical models of children as the empathic topos in the selected narratives about the Rwandan genocide in the "Gazeta Wyborcza" daily in the years 1990-2016 : conclusions of the qualitative research

Celem autorki jest analiza stereotypowych wyobrażeń dziecka, które przedstawiają dziennikarze "Gazety Wyborczej", obrazując specyfikę konfliktu w Rwandzie w latach 1990-2016. W artykule prezentowane są wnioski z badań jakościowych - analizy 350 artykułów prasowych dotyczących tematyki ludobójstwa w Rwandzie. Obraz tragedii dziecka jako toposu empatycznego stanowi częsty temat analizowanych tekstów. Autorka wyróżnia i omawia cztery stereotypowe sposoby postrzegania dziecka: dziecko ofiara, dziecko okrutne, dziecko maskotka oraz mały wojownik.

The aim of the author is to show the stereotypical models of children that are presented by journalists depicting the specificity of the war. The author presents them on the basis of the analysis of 350 newspaper articles regarding genocide in Rwanda, published in Gazeta Wyborcza in the years 1990-2016. An image of tragedy of a child, which is innocent, helpless and unconscious, is demonstrated in them very often. This happens because the children's image is an empathic topos, brought up to arise sympathy and show the cruelty of war. On the basis of the press articles, the author distinguishes and discusses four stereotypical models of children: the child victim, the cruel child, the mascot child and the little warrior.
