Characterization techniques of secondary characters in Sallust's Bellum Catilinae and Bellum Iugurthinum

Niniejsza praca ma na celu uzupełnienie badań dotyczących monografii historycznych Salustiusza, Bellum Catilinae i Bellum Iugurthinum, o analizę postaci drugoplanowych. Uczeni, w większości, skupili się na postaciach pierwszoplanowych, gdyż właściwe odczytanie ich funkcji jest kluczem do rozpoznania zamierzeń pisarskich historyka z Amiternum. W mojej pracy określam funkcję postaci sekundarnych oraz jakich technik użył Salustiusz do ich scharakteryzowania. Próbuję również odpowiedzieć na pytanie, czy bohaterowie drugiego planu zostali stypizowani.W rozdziale pierwszym badam charakterystyki postaci z kręgu Katyliny – Pizona, Kuriusza i jego kochanki Fulwii oraz Sempronii. Zwróciłam uwagę, że w opisach każdego z nich można wyróżnić jedną negatywną cechę dystynktywną. Są one spójne z wadami, które historyk przypisuje społeczeństwu rzymskiemu w swojej ogólnej koncepcji upadku obyczajów, a w szczególności współspiskowcom Katyliny. Wynika z tego, że funkcja postaci drugoplanowych ma charakter moralny. Same charakterystyki są powierzchowne, a autor nie zagłębia się w szczegóły biograficzne postaci. Rozdział drugi poświęciłam postaciom sekundarnym w Bellum Iugurthinum. Należy do nich cały szereg arystokratów obejmujących wysokie stanowiska w Rzymie, oraz prawowity następca tronu Numidii – Adherbal. Również każdej z tych postaci możemy przypisać cechę dystynktywną. Pomimo, że podobnie jak w BC, historyk nie unika powierzchowności w przedstawieniu postaci, to jednak w tej monografii cechy wiodące są o wiele wyraźniej pokazane. Funkcją wspólną dla wszystkich bohaterów drugoplanowych jest udowodnienie twierdzenia Salustiusza, że sławę i zaszczyty zdobywa się poprzez czyn, a nie dziedziczy po przodkach. Ponadto, w charakterystykach arystokratów rzymskich pokazane są wady, przede wszystkim chciwość, które przeszkodziły w doprowadzeniu wojny do końca. Natomiast bierna postawa Adherbala, poprzez skontrastowanie jej z tytułowym bohaterem, ma podkreślić wojowniczość tego drugiego. Z moich badań wynika, że postacie drugoplanowe w monografiach Salustiusza są nie tylko spójne z jego ogólną koncepcją moralną prezentowaną w każdej z nich, ale również ją uzupełniają. Natomiast ich funkcja ma bardziej charakter etyczny niż historyczny. Przypisanie każdej z postaci jednej cechy dystynktywnej to technika wspólna dla obu dzieł. Zwracając uwagę, że w drugiej monografii historyk z większą dbałością wyróżnił dominującą wadę opisywanych postaci, dowodzę rozwoju jego pisarstwa.

The aim of this thesis is to supplement studies of Sallust’s historical monographs, Bellum Catilinae and Bellum Iugurthinum, by an analysis of secondary characters. Scholars did focus mostly on the leading figures, as appropriate reading of their functions is crucial in diagnosing Amiternum historian’s writing plans. In my work I define the function of secondary characters, and diagnose what techniques Sallust used to characterize them. I also tried to answer the question whether the characters of the second plan were typified.In the first chapter I examine the characteristics of Catiline’s co-conspirators - Piso, Curius and his mistress Fulvia and Sempronia. I pointed out that in each description we can designate one negative distinctive feature. They are consistent with defects, assigned by the historian to the Roman society in its overall concept of decay, in particular to all kinds of Catiline’s co-conspirators. It follows that the function of secondary characters is a moral one. Characteristics themselves are superficial, and the author skips the biographical details.The second chapter is devoted to the secondary characters in Bellum Iugurthinum. These include a number of aristocrats on prominent positions in Rome, and the rightful heir to the throne of Numidia - Adherbal. Also each of these characters we can assign a distinguishing feature. Like in BC the historian does not avoid the superficiality in the form of presentation. Despite that, in this monograph, the leading characteristics are more clearly shown. Feature common to all the secondary characters is to prove the Sallust’s theory, that fame and honor is acquired by deed, not inherited from the ancestors. Furthermore, in the characteristics of Roman aristocrats are shown disadvantages, especially greed, which prevented in bringing the war to end. While Adherbal’s passivity pointed out by contrasting it with Jugurtha, is brought to emphasize belligerence of the title charakter.My research shows that the secondary characters in Sallust’s monographs are not only consistent with historians overall moral concept presented in each of them, but they also complement it. However, their function is more ethical than historical. Assigning to each character a distinctive feature is a technique common to both works. By noting that in the second monograph historian distinguished the dominant defect with more attention I demonstrate the development of his writing.
