Postmodernist characteristics of Alessandro Baricco's prose

SUMMARYThe subject of the thesis entitled Postmodernist features of Alessandro Baricco's prose is an analysis of the three following novels: Lands of Glass, Ocean Sea and City by an contemporary Italian writer Alessandro Baricco. The main aim of this paper is to extract from the above-mentioned novels characteristic features of postmodernist poetics and to analyse them. The first chapter describes the paradigm of postmodernism in general, presents particular characteristics of postmodernist poetics and outlines the panorama of Italian postmodernism in order to put the person and work of Alessandro Baricco into its context. The writer's biography shows that he has a versatile personality and broad interests, while his interdisciplinary activities are reflected in his novels.The second chapter provides an analysis of some fragments from Baricco’s novels from the perspective of postmodernist poetics. The blurring of boundaries between high art and mass art forms, the inclusion of literature in the modern market mechanisms, style and genre eclectics, intertextuality, metanarrativity, ludic nature of the novel and playing with the forms of text – these are the characteristics of postmodernist prose which are also present in the novels under discussion. Although Alessandro Baricco does not declare himself a postmodernist, critical works on his literary output, that the present work bases on, mainly by such authors as: Fulvio Senardi, Nella Giannetto, Joanna Ugniewska and Aleksandra Madoń, point to the characteristic elements present in Baricco’s prose. The elements, to which the critics draw attention, highlight the postmodernist nature of the Italian writers’ work and his popularity among readers around the world.

StreszczeniePrzedmiotem pracy magisterskiej zatytułowanej Postmodernistyczne cechy prozy Alessandra Baricco jest analiza trzech powieści: Zamki z piasku, Ocean morze oraz City, autorstwa współczesnego, włoskiego pisarza Alessandra Baricco. Głównym zadaniem niniejszej pracy jest wyodrębnienie z wyżej wspomnianych powieści cech charakterystycznych dla poetyki postmodernizmu oraz ich analiza. Rozdział pierwszy pracy opisuje paradygmat postmodernizmu w ogóle, przedstawia kolejno cechy charakterystyczne dla poetyki postmodernistycznej oraz zarysowuje panoramę włoskiego postmodernizmu, po to, by w tej panoramie umieścić osobę oraz twórczość Alessandra Baricco. Życiorys pisarza pokazuje, że jest on osobowością o wszechstronnych zainteresowaniach, a jego interdyscyplinarna działalność ma odzwierciedlenie w jego powieściach.Rozdział drugi pracy stanowi analizę fragmentów powieści Baricca pod kątem poetyki postmodernizmu. Zatarcie granic pomiędzy sztuką wysoką a formami sztuki niskiej, włączenie literatury we współczesne mechanizmy rynkowe , eklektyzm stylowy i gatunkowy, intertekstualność, metanarracyjność, ludyczny charakter powieści oraz zabawa formą tekstu - to cechy charakteryzujące poetykę postmodernizmu i zarazem cechy, obecne w analizowanych w pracy powieściach. Mimo, iż sam Alessandro Baricco nie deklaruje, że jest postmodernistą, to opracowania krytyczne jego twórczości, na których opiera się niniejsza praca, głównie takich autorów jak: Fulvio Senardi, Nella Giannetto, Joanna Ugniewska i Aleksandra Madoń zwracają uwagę na charakterystyczne elementy obecne w prozie Baricca. Elementy, na które zwracają uwagę krytycy, stanowią o postmodernistycznym charakterze twórczości tego włoskiego pisarza oraz o jego popularności wśród czytelników na całym świecie.
