The motive of suicide in the artistic works of Giacomo Leopardi

Tematem tej pracy jest motyw samobójstwa w twórczości jednego z najważniejszych poetów włoskiego romantyzmu, Giacomo Leopardiego, zaprezentowany na podstawie porównania trzech jego utworów. Pierwsza część pracy poświęcona jest początkom epoki romantyzmu we Włoszech, życiu i twórczości Leopardiego oraz jego pesymistycznej wizji świata. Kolejna część zajmuje się motywem samobójstwa występującym w literaturze aż do czasów Leopardiego. W ostatniej części następnie zanalizowane zostają szczegółowo i przy użyciu metody porównawczej trzy wybrane utwory Leopardiego, ukazujące jego koncepcję samobójstwa uwzględniając zmianę w jej pojmowaniu widoczną w omawianych utworach.

The aim of this paper is to present the motive of suicide in the artistic works of Giacomo Leopardi, one of the most important poets of the Italian Romanticism, through a comparison of three of his pieces. The first part of the work is devoted to the beginnings of the Romantic era in Italy, the life and artistic work of Leopardi as well as his pessimistic vision of the world. The following part engages in the motive of suicide appearing in the literature up until the times of Leopardi. The last part contains a detailed compared analysis of the three chosen works by Leopardi which shows his conception of suicide and takes into account the change of its comprehension throughout the discussed works.

Il tema di questa tesi è il concetto di suicidio nel pensiero di uno dei più importanti poeti del romanticismo italiano, Giacomo Leopardi, rappresentato sulla base di confronto tra tre dei suoi testi in chiave comparata. La prima parte è dedicata all’introduzione all’epoca, alla vita e alle opere di Leopardi e alla sua pessimistica visione del mondo. La parte successiva si occupa della diffusione del tema di suicidio nella letteratura fino a Leopardi. Poi nella parte finale vengono analizzati profondamente e in chiave comparata i testi scelti di Leopardi per mostrare il suo concetto di suicidio ma anche l’evoluzione del suo pensiero su questo tema.
