The phenomenon of prostitution in contemporary India

Prostytucja w dzisiejszych czasach stanowi poważny problem społeczny, który istnieje w niemalże każdym społeczeństwie. Na terenie kontynentu azjatyckiego zjawisko to jest szczególnie rozpowszechnione, toteż tematem tej pracy jest prostytucja we współczesnych Indiach. Nadrzędnym celem tej pracy jest ukazanie skali problemu prostytucji, jej przyczyn oraz specyfiki indyjskich dzielnic czerwonych latarni i środowiska prostytutek. Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów. Pierwszy stanowi teoretyczne przedstawienie zjawiska prostytucji. Zwraca uwagę na definicję, uwarunkowania kulturowo – społeczne, historię, odmiany oraz przyczyny tego problemu. Drugi rozdział stanowi opis tego zagadnienia na terenie Indii. Ukazuje specyfikę indyjskiego rynku usług seksualnych. Trzeci rozdział porusza tematykę prostytucji dziecięcej, która stanowi poważny problem indyjskiego społeczeństwa. Bowiem obecnie, liczba nieletnich prostytutek stale wzrasta. Szczególna uwaga została poświęcona kwestiom społeczno – kulturowym, które bezwątpienia mają wpływ na obecność dzieci w branży seksualnej.Praca ma na celu ukazanie sytuacji prostytutek, które w większości przypadków traktowane są jak współczesne niewolnice seksualne.

Nowadays prostitution is a common social problem which exists in almost every society. In Asia, this phenomenon is particularly widespread, therefore this essay describes the problem of prostitution in contemporary India. The main objective of this paper is to assess the scale of this phenomenon. Moreover, this essay presents the causes and the specificity of Indian red lights districts. This article consists of three parts. The first chapter discusses the phenomenon of prostitution from theoretical perspectives, its definitions, causes, history, variations and socio-cultural aspects. The second part presents the phenomenon of prostitution in India. It describes the Indian sex trade, brothels and how the Indian prostitutes are treated. It also shows the connection between prostitution and human trafficking. The last chapter discusses the phenomenon of child prostitution. This is an alarming problem in contemporary India, as the number of juvenile prostitutes is still growing. Therefore, the main objective of this part is to show the socio-cultural causes of this phenomenon in this country.Summarizing, this paper presents Indian prostitutes and shows that majority of them are the victims of human trafficking that is presently called 'modern slavery'.
