Vulnerable Bodies and the Ethics of Responsibility by Judith Butler

W niniejszej pracy rozważam koncepcję kruchej cielesności w etyce odpowiedzialności Judith Butler. Odpowiadam na pytanie, w jaki sposób ciało może być źródłem zobowiązania etycznego. W celu objaśnienia perspektywy Butler, omawiam najpierw fenomenologiczne rozumienie cielesności oraz relacyjny model podmiotowości (moralnej). Następnie omawiam kluczowe pojęcia etyki Butler: kruchość ciała i niepewność życia, odpowiedzialność i ramy interpretacyjne. Zastanawiam się, w jaki sposób - według Butler - dyskurs wpływa na kształtowanie się zobowiązania etycznego. Refleksje Butler uzupełniam poglądami Susan Sontag, która pisze o mechanizmach interpretacji w kontekście fotografii. Dokonuję również krytycznej analizy omówionej koncepcji, aby pokazać jej mocne strony i słabości jako teorii etycznej wobec współczesnych wyzwań i problemów moralnych.

In this paper, I consider the concept of vulnerable bodies in Judith Butler's ethics of responsibility. I answer the question of how the body can be a source of ethical obligation. In order to explain Butler's perspective, I first discuss the phenomenological understanding of corporeality and the relational model of (moral) subjectivity. I then discuss the key concepts of Butler's ethics: the vulnerability of the body and the precariousness of life, responsibility and the frames. I consider how, according to Butler, discourse affects the formation of ethical obligation. I supplement Butler's reflections with the views of Susan Sontag, who writes about the mechanisms of interpretation in the context of photography. I also make a critical analysis of the discussed concept to show its strengths and weaknesses as an ethical theory in the face of contemporary moral challenges and problems.
