The Secret history of Procopius of Caesarea. A brilliant invective or skilful use of antique motifs to present the main characters of the work.

Praca jest próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie czy inwektywa zawarta w opisach głównych bohaterów Historii sekretnej Prokopiusza z Cezarei ma w swoich podstawach motywy antyczne i jak dużą rolę odegrały one przy tworzeniu dzieła. Praca składa się z czterech rozdziałów. Każdy rozdział poświęcony jest jednej z czterech głównych postaci Historii sekretnej. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawiono charakterystykę żony Belizariusza, Antoniny. W drugim rozdziale zawarto opis Belizariusza, głównego wodza armii Justyniana. Rozdział trzeci poświęcono cesarzowej Teodorze, żonie cesarza Justyniana. W ostatnim, czwartym rozdziale zawarto charakterystykę cesarza Justyniana. Metodą badawczą tej pracy jest zestawianie opisów poszczególnych postaci, które zwierały inwektywę z podobnymi motywami odnalezionymi w literaturze antycznej. W pracy nie udało się udzielić jednoznacznej odpowiedzi na pytanie zawarte w jej tytule. Należy podkreślić, że ciągle prowadzone są badania, dotyczące różnych aspektów tego dzieła Prokopiusza, a ich dotychczasowe wyniki nie dają podstaw do stwierdzenia czy i w jakim zakresie autor Historii sekretnej korzystał z dorobku literatury antycznej. Dlatego tez w tej pracy jak i w studiach nad tym tematem postawione w tytule pytanie pozostaje ciągle otwarte.

This work is an attempt to answer the question whether invective included in the descriptions of the main characters of The Secret history of Procopius of Caesarea has got antique motifs in their bases and how big a role have they played in creating the work. The work consists of four chapters. Each chapter is devoted to one of the four main characters of the Prokopius's work. The first chapter presents the characteristics of Belisarius' wife, Antonina. The second section provides a description of Belisarius, the main leader of the army of Justinian. Chapter three focuses on Empress Theodora, the wife of Emperor Justinian. The fourth and final chapter contains the characteristics of the Emperor Justinian. The research method of this study was to compare descriptions of specific characters of The Secret history of Procopius of Caesarea, which included an invective with similar motifs which can be found in ancient literature. It was impossible to give a clear answer to the title question of this study. However it should be emphasized that the research is still conducted on various aspects of the works of Procopius, and the current results do not provide conclusions which would allow to determine whether and if so to what extent the author of the Secret History used the achievements of ancient literature. That is why in this work and in the study of the matter in general the question asked in the title stays open.
