Celem pracy jest ukazanie "Piekielnej machiny" Jeana Cocteau jako dramatu masek. Pod pojęciem "maski" rozumiem tu osobliwą konstrukcję postaci (Sfinks) oraz współistnienie różnych źródeł w dramacie Francuza (mit antyczny i autokreacja). Zasadniczą częścią rozprawy jest porównanie "Piekielnej machiny" z "Królem Edypa" Sofoklesa. Ponadto, dzięki interpretacji "Wstępu" do "Les Mariés de la tour Eiffel", będącego swoistym manifestem sztuki Poety, możliwa jest konfrontacja "Piekielnej Machiny" z postulatami autora odnośnie "la poésie du théâtre".
The main aim of thesis is to show "The Infernal Machine" by Jean Cocteau as a drama of the masks. The word "mask" should be perceived as a specific construction of characters (Sphinx) and coexistence of various traditions (ancient myth and autocreation) in drama. The main part of this study is a comparision beetwen "The Infernal Machine" and "The Oedipus the King" by Sophocles. Moreover, beacuse of the interpretation of "Preface" to "The Eiffel Tower Wedding Party", which is a Cocteau's art manifesto, is possibe to confront "The Infernal Machine" with the author's postulaltes about "la poésie du théâtre".
