“Buszujący w zbożu” J. D. Salingera – tlumaczenie elementów kulturowych w Polskiej Republice Ludowej i niekomunistycznej Francji w XX w.

Praca podejmuje temat tłumaczenia elementów kulturowych tłumaczeniu amerykańskiej powieści „Buszujący w zbożu” autorstwa J. D. Salingera z 1951 roku. Pod uwagę zostało wzięte polskie tłumaczenie Marii Skibniewskiej z 1961 roku oraz francuskie tłumaczenie Annie Saumont z 1983 roku. Analiza miała na celu zbadanie poszczególnych wyborów tłumaczek, biorąc pod uwagę kontekst rozumiany jako tło historyczne i socjologiczne, sytuację w polityce oraz na rynku literackim w każdym z trzech państw w czasie, kiedy wydana została tam powieść lub odpowiednio jej tłumaczenia. Do klasyfikacji elementów kulturowych występujących w oryginale, jak i do identyfikacji procedur tłumaczeniowych zastosowanych w polskiej i francuskiej wersji posłużyły model przekładoznawczy opracowany przez Petera Newmarka. Po podzieleniu na kategorie, trzy wersje językowe danego elementu zostały zestawione i porównane ze sobą z uwzględnieniem możliwych implikacji wynikających z różnic między danymi kontekstami. Dodatkowym elementem pracy, również wpisującym się w uwzględniane tło kulturowe, jest koncept przekazywania ideologii i manipulacji w tłumaczeniu, opisany przez Andrégo Lefevere’a. Tłumaczenia wyrażeń obraźliwych i potocznych zostały przytoczone jako przykład obszaru, gdzie zewnętrzne czynniki mogły mieć wpływ na procesy decyzyjne tłumaczek.

The thesis discusses the translation of culture-specific items in the American novel The Cacher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger, published in 1951. The tranlations taken into consideration are: the Polish version rendered by Maria Skibniewska in 1961 and the French version by Annie Saumont from 1983. The main purpose of the study was to analyse the choice of translation procedures for selected items with particular emphasis on the meaning of context, understood as historical and sociocultural background, as well as the situation in politics and on the literary market in the three countries concerned at the time when the novel or the translation was published there. The classification of the cultural elements included in the source text and identification of the translation procedures used in the Polish and the French version was performed in accordance with Peter Newmark’s typologies. The three versions of each item were juxtaposed and compared with one another with regard to differences between contexts and possible implications which it might have had on the translators’ choices. As an additional element, which is also associated with the cultural background, André Lefevere’s concept of ideology and manipulation in translation was introduced in the final part of the thesis. The translation of offensive and colloquial linguistic items were discussed as an example of a field where external factors may have influenced the translators’ decision-making process.
