Colloquial language in the translation of subtitles on the basis of the movie "The Untouchables"

Praca poświęcona jest tematowi języka potocznego w tłumaczeniu podpisów kinowych na przykładzie filmu „Nietykalni”. Pierwszy rozdział przybliża historię tłumaczenia i podaje informacje ogólne na temat tłumaczenia audiowizualnego. Koncentruje się zwłaszcza na metodzie podpisów: opisuje jak powinny one wyglądać, jakie są ich ograniczenia techniczne i wskazuje jaka jest ich pozycja w dzisiejszym świecie. W drugim rozdziale zatytułowanym „Rejestry języka” możemy znaleźć charakterystykę poziomów języka francuskiego (wzniosły, codzienny, potoczny, żargonowy i wulgarny) oraz polskiego (artystyczny, publicystyczny, naukowy, urzędowy, przemówień, potoczny ) i pogłębienie tematu języka potocznego (przykłady francuskie i polskie). Trzeci rozdział koncentruje się na analizie dialogów. Na początku streszcza film „Nietykalni” i prezentuje autorów tłumaczenia oficjalnego i kilku amatorskich. Następnie analizuje wyrażenia potoczne pojawiające się w czterech różnych tłumaczeniach (wyróżniając metodę ekwiwalentu, kompensacji, zmiany rejestru, zastąpienia słów „verlan” przez styl potoczny, ominięcia bądź redukcji powtórzeń). Na koniec prezentuje jakie tendencje deformujące są widoczne w omawianych podpisach (pominięcie kulturowe, kalki językowe, wyrazy mające podobne brzmienie ale różne znaczenie).

This master's thesis concerns subtitles' translation of colloquial language on the basis of the movie “The Intouchables”.The first chapter introduces the history of translations and provides general information on the audiovisual translations. It focuses particularly on the method of subtitles' preparing and also describes how they should look like, what are the technical limits and indicates current meening.The second chapter, entitled "The styles of language", describes the characteristic of the language styles: French (sublime, everyday, colloquial, jargon and vulgar) and Polish (artistic, journalistic, scientific, official, rhetorical, colloquial) as well penetrating analyse of the colloquial language (French and Polish examples).The third chapter focuses on the analysis of the dialogues. At the beginning it summarizes the content of the film "The Untouchables" and presents the authors of official translation as well several amateurs. Next, it analyses the colloquial expressions appearing in four different translations (by highlighting the equivalent, compensation, registry changes, replacement of the words "verlan" by the colloquial style, circumvention or reduction of the repetitions methods). At the end, it presents various deforming trends (cultural omission, linguistic calque, the words having similar sound but different meanings).

Le mémoire est consacré au sujet du langage familier, populaire, argotique et vulgaire dans la traduction des sous-titrages cinématographique sur l’exemple du film Intouchables. Le premier chapitre rapproche l'histoire de la traduction et donne les informations générales sur la traduction audiovisuelle. Il se concentre sutrout sur la méthode du sous-titrage : il décrit exigences de bons sous-titrages, sa limitation technique et le caractère des sous-titrages d'aujourd'hui. Dans le deuxième chapitre intitulé «  Registres de langue » nous pouvons trouver la caractéristique des niveaux de la langue française (soutenu, courant, familier, populaire, argotique et vulgaire) et de la langue polonaise (artistique, journalistique, scientifique, officiel, de discours publics, populaire) et le développement du sujet des registres familier et populaire, argotique et vulgaire (moyens français et polonais). Le troisième chapitre se concentre sur l'analyse des dialogues du film. Tout d'abord il résume le film « Intouchable » et présente des auteurs de la traduction officielle et des interprétations amateurs. Aprés il analyse des expressions du registre familier, populaire, argotique et vulgaires dans quatre différentes traductions (en distinguant la méthode de l'équivalent exact dans la langue cible, de la compensation, du changement du registre, du verlan substitué par le style populaire, de l'omissions ou réductions des répétitions). À la fin, il présente quelles tendances déformantes sont visibles dans ces sous-titrages (omission culturelle, traduction-calque, faux-amis).
