Shades of cosmic horror. An analysis of the cinematic expressions applied in adaptations of H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Colour Out of Space”

Niniejsza praca poddaje analizie wszystkie siedem filmowych adaptacji opowiadania „Kolor z innego wszechświata” amerykańskiego pisarza H.P. Lovecrafta. Analiza osadzona jest w kontekście biograficznym oraz literackim wraz z uwzględnieniem specyfiki gatunku weird fiction. Jako dodatkowy kontekst autor omawia istotny dla opowiadania problem fikcyjnych kolorów, jak i naukowe oraz artystyczne sposoby ich obrazowania. Główna część analizy przeprowadzona jest według autorskiej typologii dzielącej stosowane środki wyrazu na trzy kategorie: nastrój, wisceralność oraz psychodelię. Przeprowadzona analiza wykazała, że pomimo niezbywalnych cech wynikających z medium oraz konwencji gatunkowej, adaptacje ukazują szeroką gamę twórczych reinterpretacji materiału źródłowego. Głównym problemem adaptacyjnym nie jest struktura fabularna, a styl prozy oraz tytułowy Kolor, dzięki którym opowiadanie jest wyjątkowo pojemnym tekstem, pozwalającym na autorskie wykorzystania filmowego medium.

This thesis analyses all seven film adaptations of the short story “The Colour Out of Space” by the American writer H.P. Lovecraft. Analysis is set in a biographical and literary context with a focus on the specifics of the weird fiction genre. As an additional context, the author discusses the problem of fictional colours, relevant to the story, with scientific and artistic ways of imaging them. The main part of the analysis is based on the author's typology dividing the used cinematic expressions into three categories: atmosphere, viscerality and psychedelia. The analysis has shown that despite the intrinsic characteristics determined by the medium and genre conventions, adaptations show a wide range of creative reinterpretations of the source material. The main adaptation problem is not the plot structure, but the style of the prose and the eponymous Colour, which make the short story an exceptionally capacious text, allowing for authors' original uses of the cinematic medium.
