Islam, in the public sphere and the concept of laïcité in the French Republic

Celem niniejszej pracy jest omówienie ewolucji koncepcji laickości, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem sytuacji mniejszości muzułmańskiej w Republice Francuskiej. Wydarzenia z ostatnich dwudziestu lat uwidoczniły z jakimi problemami boryka się dziś laicka Francja. Swoją pracę podzieliłam na trzy bloki tematyczne opisujące genezę laickości, rys historyczny stosunków kościół – państwo do czasów współczesnych, bieżące wydarzenia, których wspólnym mianownikiem pozostaje laïcité, uwarunkowania społeczno – ekonomiczne i regulacje bezpośrednio uderzające w wyznawców islamu, szerzącą się islamofobię, a także podjęte przez państwo próby zmierzające do zintegrowania tej grupy religijnej z resztą społeczeństwa.

The main purpose of this MA thesis is to discuss the evolution of the concept laïcité by focusing mainly on the Muslim minority in the French Republic. The events from the last twenty years have shown what kind of problems nowadays the lay French Republic is grappling with. My MA thesis was divided into three chapters describing the genesis of laïcité, a historical overview of the relations between the Church and the State until, current events, for which laïcité is the common denominator, socio-economical backgrounds and the regulations afflicting Muslims directly as well as a widespread islamophobia and the state’s attempts aimed at the integration of this religious group with the rest of the society.
