Transformation of industrial cities of United States - Detroit and Pittsburgh

Tematyką niniejszej pracy są dwa miasta Stanów Zjednoczonych: Detroit i Pittsburgh. Należą one do starych amerykańskich miast przemysłowych, które musiały zmierzyć się z kryzysem i zagrożeniem upadku. Miasta zostały poddane analizie głównie pod względem społecznym, demograficznym i etnicznym, a także gospodarczym i przestrzennym. Detroit i Pittsburgh były silnie uzależnione od działalności poszczególnych branż przemysłu. W drugiej połowie XX wieku musiały zmierzyć się z załamaniem produkcji przemysłowej. Narastający kryzys dotyczyły sytuacji ekonomicznej miast, a także przyniósł nasilenie problemów społecznych. Analizowane miasta w różny sposób próbowały przezwyciężyć kryzys i jego negatywne konsekwencje. Pittsburgh wybrał drogę transformacji z miasta przemysłowego w usługowe. Detroit w dalszym ciągu opierał swoją gospodarkę na branży przemysłowej, co przyniosło poważne problemy finansowe miasta. Jednym z głównych celów pracy jest analiza wpływu procesów dezindustrializacji na zachodzące przemiany głównych funkcji badanych miast. Przedstawione zostały również inne czynniki kryzysogenne, m.in wpływ sytuacji na rynkach międzynarodowych, rola władz lokalnych, przemiany gospodarcze w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Ponadto poddano Detroit i Pittsburgh analizie porównawczej w aspekcie przezwyciężania kryzysu, obecnej sytuacji miast oraz ewentualnych perspektywach na przyszłość.

The topic of the thesis concentrates on two cities of the United States – Detroit and Pittsburgh. They belong to a group of old American industrial cities, which, inevitably, were to face the economic crisis and the possibility of decay. In the analysis of the cities, the social, demographic, ethnic, economic and spatial aspects were taken into consideration. The economy of Detroit and Pittsburgh was closely related to the functioning of certain branches of industry. The second half of the 20th century brought the collapse of industrial production. The growing crisis influenced the economy of the cities and aggravated the social situation. The analyzed cities, through different means, tried to ease the crisis and its damaging consequences. Pittsburgh transformed into a service-providing city. However, Detroit continued to rely its economy on the industry, which led to financial problems. One of the main purposes of the thesis is to analyze the influence that the processes of deindustrialization exerted on those cities. Furthermore, the thesis demonstrates other factors that led to the afore mentioned crises; for instance, the situation of the international markets and its influence on the United States, the role of local authorities, economic changes within the country. Moreover, Detroit and Pittsburgh were subject to a comparative analysis which included based on the aspect of dealing with the crisis, the current situation and potential future opportunities.
