VELVET REVOLUTION FROM A PERSPECTIVE OF HISTORIANS AND PARTICIPANTS OF THE STUDENTS STRIKE OF THE COMENIUS UNIVERSITY IN BRATISLAVA (BASED ON SELECTED MATERIALS)

Niniejsza praca jest poświęcona rewolucyjnym wydarzeniom w Czechosłowacji w 1989 roku, które doprowadziły do upadku komunizmu. Przedstawione w niej zostały przemiany, które zachodziły w 1989 roku w regionie Europy Środkowo–Wschodniej, wiosną w Polsce i na Węgrzech, następnie w NRD, Bułgarii i Rumunii. Następnie omówiono obraz aksamitnej rewolucji w historiografii na podstawie wybranych opracowań polskich i słowackich. Porównując sposób tworzenia narracji dotyczącej rewolucji, zwrócono uwagę na różnice w syntezach historycznych. Jak wynika z przeglądu literatury, różnice pojawiają się w wyborze kluczowych wydarzeń tego okresu, najczęściej pomijana jest demonstracja poprzedzająca manifestację z 17 listopada w Pradze. W opracowaniach zbyt mało uwagi poświęcono protestowi, który miał miejsce 16 listopada 1989 roku w Bratysławie. Na podstawie wspomnień ówczesnych studentów Uniwersytetu Komenskiego w Bratysławie przedstawiono przebieg wydarzeń z perspektywy ich bezpośrednich uczestników. W pracy wskazano na różnice obydwóch manifestacji, takie jak ich skala oraz znaczenie dla przebiegu rewolucji. Celem pracy było pogłębienie wiedzy na temat wydarzeń w listopadzie 1989 roku na Słowacji, które bywają pomijane w opracowaniach historycznych. Skala demonstracji w Pradze była niewątpliwie większa, jednak wydarzenia w Bratysławie także były istotne jako wyraz sprzeciwu słowackiej części Czechosłowacji wobec komunistów i warto o nich wiedzieć, by mieć pełniejszy obraz aksamitnej rewolucji.

This thesis is devoted to the revolutionary events in Czechoslovakia in 1989 that led to the fall of communism. It presents the transformations that took place in the region of Central and Eastern Europe in 1989, in Poland and Hungary in the spring, and then in East Germany, Bulgaria and Romania. Then the image of the Velvet Revolution in historiography was discussed on the basis of selected Polish and Slovak studies. Based on a comparison the narrations of this revolution, attention was drawn to differences in historical syntheses. According to a review of the literature, differences appear in the selection of key events of this period, most often the demonstration preceding the November 17 demonstration in Prague is omitted. We found out, that in the studies not enough attention has been paid to the demonstration that took place on November 16. 1989 in Bratislava. Based on the memoirs of the graduates of the Comenius University in Bratislava, the course of the demonstration was presented from the perspective of direct participants. The paper points out the differences of both manifestations, such as the their scale and significance for the course of the revolution. The main aim of the BA thesis was to increase knowledge about events in 1989 in November in Slovakia, which are sometimes omitted in historical studies. We conclude that the scale of the demonstrations from Prague was undoubtedly larger, but the events from Bratislava were an important expression of opposition from the Slovak part of Czechoslovakia and it is worth knowing about them to have a more complete image of the velvet revolution.
