The Joker, or fifteen decades of oppression : genealogies of modern laughter (1869-2019; 1940-2020)

Komizm grozy (1940-) okazuje się jedynie formą przetrwalnikową idei emancypacji o romantycznym rodowodzie (-1869-). Figura Jokera, urodziwszy się na kartach powieści Victora Hugo, ewoluuje dzięki ekspresjonizmowi, retoryce maski oraz radykalnej krytyce społeczeństwa, aby powracać na ekrany kin (Burton, Nolan, Phillips). Dystopijny śmiech Jokera prowokuje do zadania pytania o nasz stosunek do chorych, wykluczonych i nieuprzywilejowanych. Sama postać w jej najnowszej odsłonie zmusza nas natomiast do zrewidowania naszego myślenia o komedii jako formie życia.

Joker remains one of the most interesting and most controversial figures of popular culture. The movie depicting his origin story (Joker, 2019) showed that we still have trouble with unequivocal and consistent understanding of what he is. Who is he? Which discourses does he represent? Which affects is he subjected to? Where does he come from? A reconstruction of the circumstances of Joker’s origins uncovers two genealogies, which should be read complementarily. The thrilling comic character (1940-) occurs as dormant form of idea of emancipation with Romantic lineage (-1869-). The figure of Joker, having originated in Hugo’s novel, evolves, influenced by expressionism, the rhetoric of a mask and radical critique of society in order to return to the silver screen (Burton, Nolan, Phillips). Joker’s dystopic laughter provokes us to ask about our attitude to those who are sick, excluded and underprivileged. The character himself in his newest iteration forces us to reconsider our own understanding of comedy as a form of life.
