Krystian Lupa : on scenography - philosophy of space

Włodzimierz Szturc wnikliwie analizuje dzieło reżyserskie Krystiana Lupy pod kątem jego sposobu widzenia świata, wrażliwości plastycznej i metafizyki. Równocześnie próbuje zarysować dyrektywę myślenia o teatrze Lupy jako spójnym dziele filozoficznym, którego treść zostaje wyrażona w poszczególnych spektaklach, projektach, tekstach i rysunkach. Świadomość artysty Szturc utożsamia ze wspólną ontologią kolejnych spektakli, konstruowaną za pomocą scenografii: "przedmioty magiczne" - fetysze, powtarzający się motyw labiryntu, ramy i okna składają się na dynamiczną obrazową prezentację idei twórcy, przez co z punktu widzenia Arystotelesowskiego ópseos kósmos mogą być sposobem wyrażenia filozofii całego dzieła Lupy.

In the article Krystian Lupa’s theatrical works are presented from the perspective of the variability and consistency of the scenography. The latter is considered as the key to understanding the whole stageplay, which - following the basic performance theory presented in The Poetics by Aristotle - is part of the so-called ópsis. The author introduces Krystian Lupa’s reasoning about a distinct and culturally significant philosophy of theatre. His philosophy was based on the theory of individuation described by C.G. Jung, as well as on the director’s reflections about the theatre which can be compared to a maze of cognition and to the field of human initiation. The author of the article considers both drawing and graphics (which according to the artist constitue the framework of the world shown in the theatre). He interprets the basic elements in the performing arts and stresses the location and the time of the creator’s biography as the basic tenants of the philosophical system where the scenography is credited with the possibility of describing and understanding the world. The author devotes a lot of space reflecting about issues related to understanding a human being through the theatre thanks to its property of combining various kinds of arts in a show - music, decorations and motion pictures. The attempt at taking the topic of scenography into a separate discourse is carried out according to the method of essence analysis proposed by Krystian Lupa’s theatre.
