The image of the Russian intelligentsia in short stories “The Exchange”, “Preliminary Conclusions”, “The Long Good-Bye”, “Another Life” by Yury Trifonov

W pracy przedstawiony zostaje obraz rosyjskiej inteligencji XX wieku na podstawie literackich przykładów – opowiadań Zamiana, Bilans Wstępny, Długie pożegnanie, Drugie życie Jurija Trifonowa. Badania docelowe poprzedzone są przedstawieniem historii rosyjskiej inteligencji ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem jej przedstawicieli w XIX wieku – zbędnych ludzi i raznoczyńców, a także jej tragicznych dziejów w Związku Radzieckim. Opisane zostają totalitarne mechanizmy, które doprowadzają do degradacji całego społeczeństwa, a szczególnie grupy inteligentów. Ukazany zostaje upadek inteligenta zarówno w wymiarze społecznym, jak i osobistym.

The purpose of this thesis was to analyse the image of the Russian intelligentsia in the 20th century on the basis of literary examples – short stories “The Exchange”, “Preliminary Conclusions”, “The Long Good-Bye”, “Another Life” by Yury Trifonov. The main part of research is preceded by the presentation of history of the Russian intelligentsia with particular emphasis on its representatives in the 19th century: the superfluous man and raznochintsy, and their tragic history in the Soviet Union. The thesis comprises the study of totalitarian mechanisms that led to the degradation of the whole society, especially of the aforementioned intelligentsia. Having taken into consideration social and personal facets of the problem, the thesis also examines its eventual collapse.
