Reprezentacje kobiet w nauce i kulturze geekowskiej: analiza postaci Penny, Amy i Bernadette w serialu Teoria Wielkiego Podrywu

Celem niniejszej pracy jest zbadanie roli kobiet w nauce oraz w kulturze geeka na przykładzie amerykańskiego serialu komediowego The Big Bang Theory (2007–2019). Punktem wyjścia jest obserwacja, że kultura geekowska była przez długi czas wyobrażana i przedstawiana jako przestrzeń zdominowana przez mężczyzn, podczas gdy kobiety w dziedzinach STEM nadal napotykają trwałe bariery strukturalne i symboliczne. Jednocześnie badania nad reprezentacją w mediach wskazują, że ekranowe przedstawienia specjalistów STEM pozostają silnie zmaskulinizowane, a postaci kobiece w STEM pojawiają się rzadziej i częściej w sposób stereotypowy.Na tym tle serial stanowi produktywny przypadek do analizy tego, w jaki sposób współczesna kultura popularna konstruuje obraz kobiet w nauce i w środowiskach geekowskich. Praca koncentruje się na trzech centralnych bohaterkach: Penny, Amy Farrah Fowler i Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz, z których każda ucieleśnia odmienną formę kobiecości oraz inny sposób odniesienia do wiedzy naukowej, eksperckości i przynależności do kultury geekowskiej. Analiza pokazuje, że wszystkie trzy bohaterki są kształtowane zarówno przez możliwości narracyjne serialu, jak i przez konwencje gatunku sitcomu, które często przekształcają kobiecą sprawczość w komiczny kontrast lub romantyczne dopełnienie.Wyniki wskazują, że reprezentacja kobiet w serialu ma zasadniczo ambiwalentny charakter: z jednej strony poszerza ona widoczność kobiet w telewizyjnym świecie naznaczonym męskim kodem i normalizuje obecność kobiet-naukowczyń, z drugiej – osadza tę widoczność w konwencjonalnych scenariuszach kobiecości, takich jak praca emocjonalna i macierzyństwo, reprodukując znane postfeministyczne wzory. Praca argumentuje, że medialną reprezentację kobiet w nauce i kulturze geekowskiej należy oceniać nie tylko przez sam fakt ich obecności na ekranie, lecz przede wszystkim przez to, w jaki sposób ta obecność jest narracyjnie konstruowana, wartościowana oraz powiązana z szerszymi nierównościami w STEM i w przekazach medialnych.

This work aims to examine the role of women in science and geek culture through an analysis of the American sitcom The Big Bang Theory (2007–2019). The starting point is the observation that geek culture has long been imagined and represented as a predominantly male space, while women in STEM fields continue to face persistent structural and symbolic barriers. Recent large-scale studies show that, at the current pace of change, many scientific disciplines will not reach gender parity in authorship and employment for decades or even centuries, underscoring the durability of the gender gap in science. At the same time, research on media representation indicates that screen depictions of STEM professionals remain strongly male-dominated, with female STEM characters still appearing less frequently and more stereotypically than their male counterparts.Against this background, the series offers a productive case for examining how contemporary popular culture constructs the image of women in science and geek environments. The thesis focuses on three central female characters: Penny, Amy Farrah Fowler, and Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz. Each embodies a distinct form of femininity and a different relationship to scientific knowledge, expertise, and belonging in geek culture. The analysis shows that all three characters are shaped both by the narrative possibilities of the series and by the conventions of the sitcom genre, which regularly transform female agency into comic contrast or romantic complement.The theoretical foundation of the thesis draws on feminist theory, feminist media studies, and research on women in STEM. Building on the work of Simone de Beauvoir, Judith Butler, Stuart Hall, and Rosalind Gill, as well as empirical studies and policy reports on women’s participation in science and their representation in film and television, the thesis combines content, narrative, and discourse analysis. The empirical material consists of selected episodes in which Penny, Amy, and Bernadette play a particularly significant narrative role.The findings indicate that the representation of women in the series is fundamentally ambivalent. On the one hand, The Big Bang Theory expands the visibility of women in a male-coded television world and normalizes the presence of women scientists in mainstream popular culture. On the other hand, the series repeatedly anchors that visibility in conventional scripts of femininity—romantic subordination, emotional labour, and motherhood—reproducing familiar postfeminist patterns. The thesis argues that the media representation of women in science and geek culture should be assessed not only by whether women appear on screen, but above all by how that presence is narratively structured, valued, and related to broader inequalities in STEM and media representation
