Prolegomena on intercultural relations and the heritage of the city of Kyoto by Alex Kerr

Postulowana przez kulturoznawców i religioznawców perspektywa relacyjna, uwzględniająca inność, odmienność i szacunek wobec przedmiotu badań, który stanowi obce badaczowi dziedzictwo kulturowe lub jego depozytariusze, wymaga zaangażowania, kontaktu, owej relacji – najlepiej we właściwym środowisku eksplo-rowanego zagadnienia. Relacje międzykulturowe rozumiane w tym miejscu są jako interakcje zachodzące między przedstawicielami dwóch odmiennych kultur i/lub poznawczo-interpretacyjny kontakt w tym przypadku reprezentantów Zachodu z dziedzictwem japońskim. Miejscem tak definiowanego doświadczenia dla potrzeb niniejszego artykułu jest przestrzeń Kioto – miasta, które przez tysiąc lat było sto-licą Japonii. Wprowadzeniem natomiast do eksploracji wybranych elementów dzie-dzictwa Kraju Kwitnącej Wiśni stała się dla autorów artykułu twórczość wybitnego japonisty, Alexa Kerra, zwłaszcza jego publikacja Inne Kioto. W artykule posta-wiono następujące pytania badawcze: 1) Które elementy dziedzictwa japońskiego zostały wybrane przez autora jako wymagające wyjaśnienia odbiorcy zachodniemu w Kioto? 2) W jaki sposób Alex Kerr zrealizował zadanie „przełożenia” elementów dziedzictwa japońskiego w Kioto odbiorcy spoza tego kręgu kulturowego? 3) Jak relacje międzykulturowe są zapośredniczone w dziedzictwie kulturowym? Odpowiedzi na powyższe pytania osadzone zostały w kontekście studiów kulturowych w paradygmacie relacji międzykulturowych, konstruowanych w pierwszej ich fazie poznaniem odmienności i podobieństw różniących się dwóch lub więcej kultur. Udzielono ich, przeprowadzając krytyczną analizę tre-ści poszerzoną o badania pilotażowe w Kioto.

The relational perspective advocated by cultural and religious studies scholars, which considers otherness, difference and respect towards the object of study, i.e., cultural heritage or its repositories, alien to the researcher, requires engage-ment, contact, this relationship – preferably in the actual environment of the object of study. Intercultural relations are understood here as interactions between representatives of two different cultures and/or cognitive-interpretive contacts, in this case, between representatives of Western and Japanese heritage. The site of experience defined in this way for the purposes of this article is the space of Kyoto, the city that was the capital of Japan for a thousand years. For the authors of this article, the work of the Japanese scholar Alex Kerr, in particu-lar his publication Other Kyoto, introduces the exploration of selected elements of the heritage of the land of the cherry blossom. The article raises the following research questions: 1. What elements of Japanese heritage did the author choose to explain to a Western audience in Kyoto? 2. How did Alex Kerr accomplish the task of ‘translating’ elements of Japanese heritage in Kyoto to a non-Kyoto audience? 3. How are intercultural relations mediated through heritage? The answers to the above questions, in the context of cultural studies, are embedded in the paradigm of intercultural relations, which in its first phase is constructed through the recognition of the dissimilarities and similarities of two or more different cultures. These answers were provided by a critical content analysis, extended by a pilot study in Kyoto.
