Wzniosłość i malowniczość w XVIII-wiecznej estetyce brytyjskiej

The aim of this paper is to explore two categories present in eighteenth-century British aesthetics: the sublime and the picturesque. In the final chapter, I undertake a comparative analysis of these two values, focusing on epistemological themes. I argue that the titular categories differ significantly in both origin and nature: the sublime is a category of an intellectual nature, whose source lies within the subject – sensory perception does not play a direct role in the experience of the sublime. The picturesque, on the other hand, is a value rooted in sensory perception, requiring the presence of an external stimulus and not engaging the intellectual faculties. My analysis is based in particular on the works of Edmund Burke, William Gilpin, and Uvedale Price.pl
