The voice behind the stone : a linguistic and cultural analysis of selected contemporary epitaphs as mirrors of individual and collective identity construction

Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia pilotażowe badanie językoznawcze i kulturoznawcze dotyczące współczesnych polsko- i łacińskojęzycznych epitafiów na podstawie inskrypcji z cmentarza w Busku-Zdroju (województwo świętokrzyskie), który obejmuje zarówno część komunalną, jak i parafialną. Celem badania jest uzyskanie pierwszych wglądów w cechy językowe, stylistyczne i semantyczne nowoczesnych epitafiów nagrobnych oraz analiza ich roli w konstrukcji indywidualnej i zbiorowej tożsamości w kontekście lokalnej kultury pamięci. Przykładowa analiza wybranych inskrypcji ukazuje, jak tradycyjne formuły religijne łączą się z współczesnymi, często spersonalizowanymi formami upamiętnienia. Porównanie między częściami komunalną a parafialną cmentarza pozwala także na wyciągnięcie wniosków dotyczących potencjalnych różnic w wyrażaniu wartości religijnych i kulturowych. Badanie traktuje epitafia jako hybrydowe teksty na styku prywatnej żałoby i publicznej reprezentacji życia, śmierci oraz norm społecznych we współczesnej Polsce. Stanowi ono podstawę do dalszych badań w kontekście regionalnym i ponadregionalnym.

This article presents a pilot linguistic and cultural study of contemporary Polish- and Latin-language epitaphs based on inscriptions from the cemetery in Busko-Zdrój (Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship), which includes both a municipal and a parish section. The aim of the study is to gain initial insights into the linguistic, stylistic, and semantic features of modern grave epitaphs, as well as to analyze their role in the construction of individual and collective identity within the context of the local culture of memory. The exemplary analysis of selected inscriptions reveals how traditional religious formulas merge with contemporary, often personalized forms of commemoration. The comparison between the municipal and parish sections of the cemetery also allows conclusions to be drawn regarding potential differences in the expression of religious and cultural values. The study regards epitaphs as hybrid texts situated at the intersection of private mourning and public representation of life, death, and social norms in contemporary Poland. It provides a basis for further research in regional and broader contexts.

Dieser Beitrag präsentiert eine sprach- und kulturwissenschaftliche Pilotstudie zu zeitgenössischen polnisch- und lateinsprachigen Epitaphen anhand von Inschriften auf dem Friedhof in Busko-Zdrój (Woiwodschaft Heiligkreuz), der sowohl einen kommunalen als auch einen pfarrlichen Teil umfasst. Ziel der Untersuchung ist es, erste Einblicke in die sprachlichen, stilistischen und semantischen Merkmale moderner Grabepitaphe zu gewinnen sowie deren Rolle in der Konstruktion individueller und kollektiver Identität im Kontext der lokalen Erinnerungskultur zu analysieren. Die exemplarische Analyse ausgewählter Inschriften zeigt, wie sich traditionelle religiöse Formeln mit zeitgenössischen, oft personalisierten Ausdrucksformen des Gedenkens verbinden. Der Vergleich zwischen dem kommunalen und dem pfarrlichen Teil des Friedhofs erlaubt zudem Rückschlüsse auf potenzielle Unterschiede im Ausdruck religiöser und kultureller Werte. Die Studie versteht Epitaphe als hybride Texte an der Schnittstelle zwischen privater Trauer und öffentlicher Repräsentation von Leben, Tod und gesellschaftlichen Normen im heutigen Polen. Sie bildet eine Grundlage für weiterführende Untersuchungen im regionalen und überregionalen Kontext.
