The Japanese invasion of Manchuria in the light of selected titles of the Polish press (1931-1932)

Celem niniejszej pracy jest przedstawienie problemu postrzegania przez polską prasę wydarzeń związanych z japońską inwazją na Mandżurię z 1931 roku. Praca składa się z czterech rozdziałów. Pierwszy z nich porusza antecedencje relacji chińsko-japońskich, które ostatecznie doprowadziły do wybuchu konfliktu. Drugi rozdział przedstawia bezpośrednie incydenty, które doprowadziły do inwazji, tj. incydent Nakamury oraz incydent mukdeński. Następnie przedstawiono pierwsze etapy zmagań zbrojnych i dyplomatycznych. Przedstawiono również pierwsze opiniotwórcze artykuły, które ukazywały się na łamach polskich dzienników na temat wydarzeń w Mandżurii. Rozdział trzeci skupia się na bitwie nad rzeką Nen, jak i ogólnie kampanią Heilongjiang. Opisany został rownież incydent Tianjin. W rozdziale kontynuowany jest wątek dyplomatyczny. Poruszono utworzenie tzw. Komisji Lyttona przez Rade Ligi Narodów, jak i ogłoszenia przez rząd Stanów Zjednoczonych Ameryki tzw. doktryny Stimsona. Prace zamyka opisanie bitwy o miasto Jinzhou i Harbin oraz reakcje polskiej prasy na tworzenie się marionetkowego państwa Mandżukuo.

The purpose of this thesis is to present the problem of the Polish press's perception of the events surrounding the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1931. The work consists of four chapters. The first addresses the antecedents of Sino-Japanese relations that ultimately led to the outbreak of the conflict. The second chapter presents the immediate incidents that led to the invasion, i.e. the Nakamura Incident and the Mukdean Incident. The first stages of the armed and diplomatic struggle are then presented. The first opinion-forming articles that appeared in Polish dailies on the events in Manchuria are also presented. The third chapter focuses on the Battle of the Nen River and the Heilongjiang Campaign in general. The Tianjin incident is also described. The chapter continues with the diplomatic theme. The creation of the so-called Lytton Commission by the Council of the League of Nations is discussed, as well as the announcement of the so-called Stimson Doctrine by the United States government. The work closes with a description of the battle for the cities of Jinzhou and Harbin and the reactions of the Polish press to the formation of the puppet state of Manchukuo.
