The Myth of Alexander the Great. The figure of the Macedonian king in a perspective of cultural studies

Celem niniejszej pracy było wykazanie, że postać jednego z najbardziej rozpoznawalnych zdobywców wszech czasów, Aleksandra Wielkiego, funkcjonuje nie tylko w sferze historycznej, ale również mitologicznej.Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów. Pierwszy poświęcony jest definicji i funkcjom mitu oraz przeglądowi najważniejszych perspektyw badawczych. Dwa ostatnie podrozdziały odnoszą się do roli mitu w stosunkach międzynarodowych, edukacji i propagandzie oraz szczególnego rodzaju mitu: mitu herosa.Rozdział drugi dotyczy pozytywnego mitu Aleksandra Wielkiego: jego literackiej bazy – „Żywotów równoległych” Plutarcha i „Opowieści o Aleksandrze” – oraz elementów charakterystycznych: cudownych okoliczności poczęcia i narodzin macedońskiego króla, jego anatomii; wizerunku w religiach, i jako idealnego króla–filozofa, a także postaci słynnego zdobywcy w mitach etnicznych i narodowych – wojnie polsko–macedońskiej opisanej przez Kadłubka, Privilegium Slavicum oraz współczesnej Macedonii.Rozdział trzeci koncentruje się na negatywnym micie macedońskiego władcy i jego bazie – „Historii Aleksandra Wielkiego” pióra Kwintusa Kurcjusza Rufusa oraz aspektach takich jak: pycha Aleksandra, Aleksander jako niszczyciel, najeźdźca, pijak i morderca, czarny mit współcześnie, czy wreszcie szczególnej podkategorii negatywnego mitu – micie ku przestrodze.

The aim of this study is to show that the character of one of the most recognisable conquerors of all-time, Alexander the Great, functions not only in a historical realm, but also a mythological one.This work consists of three chapters. The first is dedicated to a definition and functions of myth and an overview of the most important research perspectives. The two last subsections refer to the role of myth in international relations, education, and propaganda and a special type of myth: the myth of a hero.The second chapter involves a positive myth of Alexander the Great: its literary base – ‘Parallel Lives’ by Plutarch and ‘The Romance of Alexander’ – and its characteristic elements: the miraculous circumstances of the Macedonian king’s conception and birth, his anatomy; image in religions, and as an ideal king and philosopher, and a figure of the famous conqueror in ethnic and national myths – the Polish–Macedonian war described by Kadłubek, Privilegium Slavicum and contemporary Macedonia.The third chapter focuses on a negative myth of the Macedonian king and its base – ‘Histories of Alexander the Great’ by Quintus Curtius Rufus and aspects like: Alexander’s pride, Alexander as a destroyer, invader, drinker and murderer, black myth contemporarily and, finally, a special subcategory of this negative myth – a cautionary myth.
