Challenging the heteronormative reading - about the practice of queerbaiting and the fight for LGBT+ representation in TV series

Queerbaiting należy do praktyk, które zostały skonceptualizowane na forach fanowskich w drugiej dekadzie XXI wieku. Jest on intencjonalną strategią producentów, którzy, aby wyzyskiwać odbiorców LGBT+, zamieszczają w utworze wskazówki nieheteronormatywności bohaterów, lecz nigdy ich jawnie nie potwierdzają. Celem niniejszej pracy jest przybliżenie konceptu queerbaitingu, przeważnie na przykładzie amerykańskich seriali głównego nurtu, poprzez przedstawienie jego definicji i ewolucji jego rozumienia oraz uwzględnienie kontekstu cenzury filmowej i telewizyjnej w Stanach. Dodatkowo poruszona zostaje kwestia tego, jak queerbaiting wpływa na zaangażowanie queerowych fanów w walkę o lepszą reprezentację LGBT+ w telewizji.

Queerbaiting is one of the practices that were coined on fan forums in the second decade of the 21st century. It is the intentional strategy of producers who, in order to exploit LGBT+ audiences, hint at non-heteronormativity of the characters in their work, but never explicitly confirm it. The aim of this paper is to introduce the concept of queerbaiting, mainly using the example of American mainstream TV series, by presenting its definition and evolution of its meaning, and taking into account the context of film and television censorship in the United States. Additionally, this work raises the issue of how queerbaiting influences the involvement of queer fans in the fight for a better LGBT+ representation on television.
