Cyberpunk in Translation. Neologisms in the Polish Translation of the Novel "Neuromancer" written by William Gibson.

Niniejsza praca obejmuje omówienie neologizmów użytych w powieści Williama Gibsona pt. Neuromancer i porównanie ich z polskim tłumaczeniem Piotra W. Cholewy. W pracy posiłkowano się m.in klasyfikacją neologizmów Petera Newmarka.Analizowany materiał podzielono na trzy grupy tematyczne: najpojemniejsza z nich obejmuje wyrażenia związane z techniką, technologią i informatyką, druga ¬– nazwy własne, a trzecia – pozostałe elementy uniwersum cyberpunkowego związane m.in z życiem codziennym, zawodami, używkami i przestępstwami. Każdą grupę opatrzono podsumowaniem, w którym zwrócono uwagę na główne trudności związane z przekładem oraz omówiono rozwiązania zastosowane przez tłumacza.W pracy omówiono i skomentowano szereg decyzji Piotra W. Cholewa i wykazano, że nie stosował on konsekwentnie określonych strategii tłumaczeniowych. W wielu przypadkach zdecydował się na oddanie w przekładzie jednego z aspektów oryginalnego wyrażenia kosztem innych, nawet tam, gdzie możliwe było pełniejsze oddanie danego wyrażenia przy użyciu środków językowych dostępnych w polszczyźnie.

The thesis includes an overview of neologisms used in the novel Neuromancer by William Gibson and their comparison with the Polish translation by Piotr W. Cholewa. The thesis has been based, i.a., on the classification of neologisms proposed by Peter Newmark.The analyzed material has been divided into three thematic groups: the vastest contains expressions associated with technique, technology and informatics; the second group contains proper names, and the third – the remaining elements of the cyberpunk universe, i.a. related to daily life, professions, drugs and crime. Each group is accompanied by a summary which highlights the major difficulties of translation and discusses the solutions used by the translator.The thesis provides an overview and commentary concerning various decisions made by Piotr W. Cholewa and shows that he did not apply consistently specific translation solutions. In many cases, he decided to render one of the aspects of the original expression used in the translation at the expense of others, even where it was possible to render said expression to a fuller extent with the use of language means available in the Polish language.
