In the circle of Carpathian myths and legends : reflections on the morphology of the hills in search of the lost hillfort

The subject of this paper is the legendary hillfort of Żmij, which had existed in the Slavic Culture for hundreds of years. The main goal is to find another „Żmigrod” as precisely as possible, located within the Polish Carpathians. One of the other goals of this article is to recreate places that are important in the legend of the Żmij to the most possible extent. The difference in the relative height of individual hills will show the significance of topography in ancient beliefs. Additionally, it was measured in hypsometric profiles of the hills whether the mountain is “round” or “spired”. Other maps related to the morpho metry of the research area, i.e. the Sanok area, were also generated. The main result was a visualization developed in ArcGIS Pro, which was then compared with the etymological types of the names of more important hills. On this basis, a spatial analysis was perfor med, and an attempt was made to answer the question of where another Żmigród could have existed. The study includes both literature references and geoinformatics research, as well as the results of considerations made during field research.
