Controversy over a protective deity within the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism.

Niniejsza praca zawiera najważniejsze informacje dotyczące sporu, jaki zaistniał w ostatnich kilkudziesięciu latach w świecie buddyzmu tybetańskiego. Kontrowersja doprowadziła do rozłamu w jednej ze szkół zwanej gelug. Na Zachodzie powstał ruch Nowej Kadampy, której nazwa odnosi się do nauk Tsonkapy, założyciela gelug. Na jej czele stoi Gesze Kelsang Gjaco, charyzmatyczny guru, zarzucający Czternastemu Dalajlamie łamanie praw wolności religijnej. Konflikt dotyczy jednego z bóstw opiekuńczych, Dordże Szugdena, mściwego protektora stojącego na straży czystości tradycji gelug, będącego w opozycji do bóstwa Pehara, właściwego obrońcy szkoły, ściśle związanego z wyrocznią Neczung. W pracy został przedstawiony nie tylko zarys historii powstania bóstwa, ale również podłoże religijne i polityczne sporu, który nadal pozostaje niewyjaśnioną tajemnicą buddyzmu tybetańskiego.

The work contains the most important information on a conflict that arouse in the last several dozen years within the world of Tibetan Buddhism. The controversy led to the scission in one of the school called Gelug. In the West there came forth the New Kadampa movement, the name of which pertains to teachings of Tsongkhapa, the founder of Gelug school. Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, a charismatic guru, spearheads the movement accusing the 14th Dalai Lama of breaking the right to religious freedom. The conflict applies to one of the protective deities, Dorje Shugden, the vengeful protector who upholds the purity of Gelug school and stands in the opposite to Pehar, the proper protective deity strictly connected to The Nechung Oracle. This work points out not only the historic outline of the inception of the deity, but also the political and religious basis of the conflict which remains an unexplained mystery of Tibetan Buddhism.
