Na granicy: przestrzeń i konflikt w Na plaży Chesil Iana McEwana

Powyższa praca dotyczy sposobu ukazania kategorii przestrzeni w noweli Na plaży Chesil Iana McEwana. Jej celem jest udowodnienie, że konflikt głównych bohaterów ma podłoże w przestrzeni, na którą naniesione zostały płciowe, klasowe i ideologiczne ograniczenia. Praca opiera się głównie na teoriach produkcji przestrzeni społecznej Henri Lefebvre oraz heterotopii Michela Foucaulta. Pierwszy rozdział oferuje wgląd w stan przestrzeni społeczno-politycznej Wielkiej Brytanii w roku 1962, natomiast drugi rozdział skupia się na specyficznych cechach najbardziej istotnych miejsc przedstawionych w noweli. Stwierdzone zostaje, że przestrzeń, w której bohaterowie czują się ograniczeni nie jest wystarczająco inkluzywna, co może zostać zmienione poprzez wytworzenie przestrzeni różnic. W analizie przyjęte zostają elementy literackiej krytyki feministycznej, marksistowskiej i postkolonialnej.

This paper is concerned with the representation of the category of space in Ian McEwan’s novella On Chesil Beach. It aims to prove that the conflict between the protagonists stems from the impositions of gender, class, and ideology mapped onto the spaces that have shaped them. The thesis relies mostly on the theories of Henri Lefebvre’s social production of space and Michel Foucault’s heterotopia. The first chapter provides an insight into the shape of the socio-political sphere in the 1962 Britain, while the focus of the second chapter are idiosyncrasies of most relevant places described in the book. It is argued that the space the characters find themselves confined to fails to be inclusive, which can be changed by means of production of a differential space. In the analysis the elements of feminist, Marxist, and post-colonial critical perspectives are addressed.
