The image of the dog in Russian literature at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries

Tematem pracy jest analiza obrazu psa w literaturze rosyjskiej przełomu XIX i XX wieku. Celem tej pracy jest zbadanie, jak w tym okresie kształtowała się i wyglądała reprezentacja psów jako pełnoprawnych bohaterów literackich. Zagadnienia teoretyczne zostały uwzględnione we wstępie – obejmują one osadzenie pracy w nurcie animal studies oraz przegląd literatury przedmiotu. Zagadnienia praktyczne znajdują się we właściwych rozdziałach pracy. Pierwszy rozdział poświęcony jest próbie odnalezienia podmiotowości psów oraz ich zbiorczej charakterystyce w utworach lirycznych I. Turgieniewa, I. Bunina oraz S. Jesienina. W drugim rozdziale zostają scharakteryzowane relacje łączące psich oraz ludzkich bohaterów literackich w utworach prozatorskich F. Dostojewskiego, I. Turgieniewa oraz I. Bunina. W podsumowaniu przedstawione są wnioski na temat tego, jakimi bohaterami literackimi są psy w literaturze rosyjskiej omawianego okresu.

The subject of this thesis is the analysis of the image of the dog in Russian literature at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The aim of this thesis is to examine how in this period the representation of dogs as full-fledged literary characters was shaped and looked like. Theoretical issues were included in the introduction – they include embedding the work in the field of animal studies and a review of the literature on the subject. Practical issues are included in the relevant chapters of the work. The first chapter is devoted to the attempt to find the subjectivity of dogs and their collective characteristics in poetry works of I. Turgenev, I. Bunin and S. Yesenin. In the second chapter the relations between dog and human literary characters are analyzed in prose works of F. Dostoevsky, I. Turgenev and I. Bunin. The summary presents conclusions about what literary characters the dogs are in the Russian literature of this period.
