The architecture and furnishings of the Dominican Church of St. John the Baptist in Janów Lubelski

Artykuł dotyczy architektury i wyposażenia kościoła Dominikanów pw. Św. Jana Chrzciciela w Janowie Lubelskim. Pomimo istniejącego stanu badań, w świetle nieuwzględnionych wcześniej dokumentów, przede wszystkim najstarszego znanego inwentarza kościelnego w 1828 roku, można rzucić nowe światło na kwestie artystyczne kościoła. Dzięki kwerendzie w źródłach kurii krakowskiej udało się ustalić ilość i wezwania ołtarzy konsekrowanych wraz z kościołem w 1742 roku. Analiza źródeł pozwoliła na zrekonstruowanie stanu wyposażenia świątyni krótko po jego powstaniu pod koniec XVIII wieku. Funkcjonujące w literaturze atrybucje poddano krytycznej analizie i zweryfikowano konfrontując je z najnowszymi ustaleniami. Udało się ustalić prawidłową tematykę obrazów w ołtarzach, w większości przypadków zidentyfikowano wzorce graficzne na których zostały oparte. Ujawniono także szereg nazwisk nieznanych wcześniej artystów pracujących dla kościoła w Janowie w XVIII-XX wieku. W świetle powyższych analiz uznano, że atrybucję architektury kościoła inż. Janowi Michałowi Linkowi należy odrzucić, natomiast wykonanie ołtarzy przez warsztat Karola Burzyńskiego, przy znacznym udziale Jana Michała Wurtzera można utrzymać, korygując jednocześnie informacje o tym ostatnim rzeźbiarzu. Pozostaje mieć nadzieję, że nowe ustalenia zawarte w artykule będą w przyszłości wykorzystane przy pracach konserwatorskich, aby przywrócić wyposażeniu janowskiej świątyni jej pierwotny wygląd.

The article concerns the architecture and furnishings of the Dominican church of St. John the Baptist in Janów Lubelski. Despite the existing state of research, in light of previously overlooked documents - above all, the oldest known church inventory from 1828 - it is possible to shed new light on the artistic aspects of the church. Thanks to an inquiry into the sources of the Kraków curia, it was possible to establish the number and dedications of the altars consecrated together with the church in 1742. The analysis of the sources made it possible to reconstruct the state of the church’s furnishings shortly after its completion at the end of the 18th century. Attributions found in the literature were subjected to critical analysis and verified against the most recent findings. The correct iconography of the altar paintings was established, and in most cases the graphic models on which they were based were identified. A number of previously unknown names of artists working for the Janów church from the 18th to the 20th century were also revealed. In light of these analyses, the attribution of the church's architecture to engineer Jan Michał Link must be rejected, whereas the execution of the altars by the workshop of Karol Burzyński, with the significant involvement of Jan Michał Wurtzer, can be upheld - while simultaneously correcting information concerning the latter sculptor. It is to be hoped that the new findings presented in the article will, in the future, be used in conservation work to restore the original appearance of the furnishings of the Janów church.
