Areas of misunderstanding in Ryszard Kapuściński's Travels with Herodotus and Henri Michaux's A Barbarian in Asia

Tematem pracy są sfery niezrozumienia, pojawiające się w kontakcie z Innym i w czasie obcowania z obcą kulturą. Autorka wykorzystuje Podróże z Herodotem Ryszarda Kapuścińskiego oraz Barbarzyńcę w Azji Henriego Michaux. Analizy poszczególnych dzieł autorka dokonuje, wykorzystując założenia z zakresu badań antropologiczno-kulturowych, pomija interpretację w nurcie postkolonialnym, a przedmiot analizy zawęża jedynie do kontekstu Indii. Przeprowadzając analizę wybranych dzieł autorka wyodrębnia poszczególne sfery ludzkiego życia, w których dochodzi do niezrozumienia wynikającego z różnic kulturowych, zwracając szczególną uwagę na stosunek narratora do Innego. Przedstawia różnice pomiędzy postawą polskiego reportera wobec przedstawicieli obcej kultury a postawą francuskiego artysty. Autorka dochodzi do wniosków, że niezrozumienie kulturowe objawia się w tych samych sferach życia prezentowanych zarówno w jednym jak i drugim reportażu, jednak zasadniczą różnicę stanowi reakcja narratorów na to, co różne.

The topic of the article is the areas of misunderstanding appearing in contacts with the Other and the other culture. The author interprets Ryszard Kapuściński’s Travels with Herodotus and Henri Michaux’s A Barbarian in Asia using the assumptions of anthropological and cultural researches. It omits postcolonial interpretation and narrows the subject of analysis to context of India.The author extracts particular areas of human life in which there is a misunderstanding resulting from cultural differences. It pays attention to narrator’s attitude to the Other. It also shows the differences between Polish and French reporter’s reactions. The author concludes that cultural misunderstanding manifests itself in the same areas of human life but the essential difference between Travels with Herodotus and A Barbarian in Asia is the narrators’ reaction and attitude to the Other
