Scenes from The Dreyfus Affair. The Affair as a spectacle

Praca jest próbą analizy wybranych wydarzeń składających się na tzw. sprawę Dreyfusa – aferę społeczno-polityczną skoncentrowaną wokół Alfreda Dreyfusa, francuskiego kapitana żydowskiego pochodzenia, który w 1894 roku został niesłusznie skazany na karę degradacji i zesłanie do kolonii karnej. Autor wskazuje na teatralny charakter poszczególnych etapów sprawy, na której dramaturgię składają się powiązane ze sobą widowiska mające – z racji udziału w nich nowoczesnych mediów – masowy charakter. Kolejne rozdziały poświęcone są przebiegowi i recepcji poszczególnym scen afery: ceremonii degradacji, pobytowi więźnia na Wyspie diabelskiej (i równocześnie rozgrywającemu się procesowi Emila Zoli) oraz procesowi rewizyjnemu oficera. Autor zauważa, że składające się na aferę – pozornie republikańskie, należące do nowoczesnego porządku – widowiska służyły przednowoczesnym celom.

The thesis undertakes the topic of The Dreyfus Affair - a socio-political scandal concerning the figure of Alfred Dreyfus, a French, Jewish captain, unjustly sentenced to degradation and deportation to a penal colony in 1894. The author underlines the performative character of the consecutive stages of the case seen as a chain of theatrical events which – thanks to modern media – arouse massive interest. The following chapters contain an analysis of the course and reception of particular scenes of the Affair: the ceremony of degradation, the detention of the prisoner on Devil’s Island, the trial of Emil Zola (proceeding at the same time) and the trial in Rennes. The author notices that the particular spectacles which compose The Dreyfus Affair - seemingly republican, characteristic for the modern society - were in fact manifestations of ancien régime.
