Translation of humour. Puns in Polish language version of Fawlty Towers sitcom

Celem niniejszej pracy magisterskiej jest zbadanie, czy gry słowne zawarte w serialu Hotel Zacisze są nieprzekładalne, a jeśli tak to w jakim stopniu. Analizie poddano angielskie gry słowne oraz ich polskie tłumaczenia. Są one analizowane ze względu na technikę, którą zastosował tłumacz podczas ich tłumaczenia, z wyróżnieniem poszczególnych odcinków, w których się pojawiły.Podstawa teoretyczna niniejszej pracy podzielona została na cztery części. Pierwsza z nich dotyczy tematu ekwiwalencji. Omówione są dokładniej najważniejsze teorie z nią związane. W kolejnej części zaznajamia się czytelnika z problemem nieprzekładalności. W części trzeciej w kilku słowach opisano rodzaje tłumaczeń audiowizualnych i ograniczenia, które nakładają one natłumacza. W części ostatniej zawarte są informacji odnośnie pojęcia humoru oraz opisu językoznawczego teorii z nim związanych.

The aim of this thesis is to investigate whether puns in Fawlty Towers sitcom are really untranslatable, and if yes then to what extent. The subject of the analysis are English puns and their polish translations. The puns are analyzed due to the technique, which the translator used in order to translate them. There is also an information about the episode in which the puns appeared.The theoretical background consists of four parts. The first one concerns the topic of equivalence and the most important theories related to it. The next part familiarizes the reader with the problem of untranslatability. The third part of the thesis is about audiovisual translations and the limitations with which the translator has to deal with. The last part consists of detailed information about the notion of humour and the linguistic description of theories related to it.
