Embodied experience in blind women within the context of motherhood. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis

Niniejsza praca stanowi próbę opisu i zrozumienia, jak kobiety niewidome doświadczają cielesności w kontekście wkraczania w macierzyństwo. Świadectwa kobiet z niepełnosprawnością są często badane z perspektywy społecznych uprzedzeń i normatywnych porównań, podczas gdy ich osobiste przeżycia i związane z nimi wyzwania pozostają niedostatecznie poznane. Ciało w tej pracy rozumiane jest jako miejsce istnienia, a doświadczana niepełnosprawność jako cielesny sposób bycia w świecie i wchodzenia z nim w interakcje. Przeprowadzenie pogłębionych wywiadów częściowo ustrukturyzowanych z dziewięcioma niewidomymi matkami oraz zastosowanie Interpretacyjnej Analizy Fenomenologicznej (IPA) umożliwiło zbliżenie się do rozumienia ich subiektywnego doświadczania cielesności. Wyróżnione kategorie tematyczne - Ciało współdzielone, Ciało przekroczone, Ciało opuszczone, Ciało matki - przeprowadzają czytelnika przez analizę procesu stawania się matką, skupiając się na subiektywnym doświadczeniu ciała ciężarnego i przeżywaniu porodu, na pierwszych fizycznych kontaktach z niemowlęciem, dalszym rozwoju kontaktu cielesnego z dzieckiem, oraz na osobistych znaczeniach, jakie niewidome matki nadają swoim ciałom obecnie. Wyniki analizy obrazują zarówno to, co wspólne, jak i to, co unikalne w przeżyciach niewidomych matek. Praca zakończona jest dyskusją wyników i propozycją kierunków dalszych badań.

This paper is an attempt to describe and understand how blind women experience embodiment in the context of entering motherhood. The experiences of women with disabilities are often studied from the perspective of social prejudices and normative comparisons, while their personal experiences and the associated challenges remain insufficiently explored. In this work, the body is understood as a site of existence, and the experienced disability as a bodily way of being in the world and interacting with it. Conducting in-depth semi-structured interviews with nine blind mothers and applying Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) allowed for a closer understanding of their subjective experiences of embodiment. The identified thematic categories - Shared Body, Transcended Body, Abandoned Body, and Mother’s Body - guide the reader through the analysis of the process of becoming a mother, focusing on the subjective experience of the pregnant body, the experience of childbirth, the first physical interactions with the newborn, the ongoing development of bodily contact with the child, and the personal meanings that blind mothers currently ascribe to their bodies. The results of the analysis illustrate both the commonalities and the unique aspects of the experiences of blind mothers. The paper concludes with a discussion of the results and suggestions for future research directions.
