The problem of literary censorship in the Indian subcontinent on the example of works of Sadat Hasan Manto

Praca podejmuje temat cenzury literackiej, zapoczątkowanej w czasach Indii Brytyjskich i kontynuowanej po ich podziale zarówno w Indiach jak i Pakistanie. Przedmiotem analizy są opowiadania kontrowersyjnego twórcy – Sadata Hasana Manto [Sa'ādat Hasan Manṭo], znanego jako enfant terrible literatury urdu. Pisarz ten tworzył zarówno na terenie Indii jak i Pakistanu i w obu tych krajach zmagał się z cenzurą, która zarzucała mu obsceniczność i deprawowanie czytelników. Mimo tych oskarżeń, Manto zapisał się na kartach historii literatury subkontynentu indyjskiego jako wybitny przedstawiciel nurtu modernizmu. Praca jest próbą ustalenia gdzie według władz znajduje się granica, której pisarz nie powinien przekraczać.

The paper deals with literary censorship which began in the days of British India and continued after its division in both India and Pakistan. The subject of analysis are the stories of a controversial writer - Sadat Hasan Manto [Sa'ādat Hasan Manto], known as the enfant terrible of Urdu literature. He created both in India and Pakistan and struggled with censorship in both these countries, where he was accused of obscenity and corrupting readers’ minds. Despite these accusations, Manto went down in the history of literature of the Indian subcontinent as an outstanding representative of modernism. The thesis is an attempt to determine where the government sets the limit which the writer should not exceed.
